When does Manning become a liability?

Here's the one I get frustrated with Manning.... he can do it.

We go tempo. We throw it out to Rus against Okie State cause they're crashing hard. We put X in the back field. He has the ability....

but for whatever reason - ego or stubborness or whatever - he goes back to what he wants to go rather than calling the game his eyes tell him he needs to call until far too much time has gone by. Its not that he's not capable of doing it because he has at times ....

the reason I think he can upgrade from Manning is because he doesn't seem to be able to counter punch at all.... for almost a half. Its like he gets so stunned when the defense takes away what he wants to do that it takes him a half or more to adjust. That's my biggest frustration with him. Is that he doesn't seem to be fluid in calling plays and how we attack opponents - more like if Plan A doesn't work he has to go into a mini coma to try to find an answer and we struggle until he comes too again.

The good game-good game-terrible game-good game-terrible game 5 game runs is the Manning special. It’s like we never go back to the things that work

Super disappointing to see no tosses to Breece and to see Purdy almost refusing to dump it to possibly the best safety valve threat in CFB and instead forcing weak or bad throws down field. Then of course the one time he checks it down Breece has a sweet catch and run for a TD.

Also, after screen pass upon screen pass against Texas, we just abandoned that today. Tech was crashing hard to stop the run so my guess is screens and other quick passes would have helped offset this. Yet nothing

There's times when Hall isn't even that open as he's covered but I like the chances with him vs. that first defender to at least get positive yardage.

And that last drive takes more clock away and possibly gives Hall room to make the play to get 6.

So many weird trends.

It's been posted before...the coaching staff, particularly on the offense side, lacks P5 coaching experience. Look at the bios. And it shows up during gameday in offensive game management and general game preparation, and in skill position development. A few of the coaches have nothing more than grad assistant experience prior to ISU, and a few others have less than 5 years before ISU.

I think Campbell needs to fix this, or it is going to take him down.

man this is a good post, I just went and read the offense coach bios….all of a sudden things make a lot more sense, there isn’t much there for any of them other than runnning backs …. and really one could argue Manning really has no real qualifications to be an OC

It sure seems we lead the world in snaps with the play clock under 5 seconds. Would expect this with a bunch of underclass players but not with this line up. A huge problem continues to be the never ending subbing on virtually every play that allows the defense to sub and catch their breath. Maybe the goal is to rest our defense but it’s frustrating to watch, especially down 2 or 3 scores. Beat Boomer!

It’s not just Manning. Matt Campbell has checked out and will take some other job. Thus dishonoring his promise to win this conference

That's not at all what he's been telling this class of recruits which will end up top 35 for the first time in Iowa State history

I've been calling for Manning's head for most of the last two seasons for all of the reasons listed above. He has a 'box' that he wants his plays/game to fit in, and NO MATTER WHAT, he's going to do it. That's been to our detriment a lot recently. Examples - IMO - Brock is his best as a run-and-gun cowboy. He makes some mistakes there, but no more than what he did today. BUT, when he's been that free-spirited QB, it's forced D's to respect his running ability and put a spy on him, which opens up so many other things. Breece and Montgomery - when are we going to stop going to inside zone reads when they have the skills/speed/shiftiness to break plays open all the time? Can you imagine these guys w/ a competent OL and playcalling? My goodness, would be more insane than they are now/were w/ Monty. As mentioned above, Manning also sucks serious ass at adjustments (he's no Heacock in the 2nd half). Which goes back to his putting things in his box/silo. If the opposing D doesn't do what he thinks they're going to do, it's all blown up.

Lastly, I know that when we had CMC running as the OC, we were all pretty critical. But man, we put up some points. When I heard that Manning was coming back at the Alamo Bowl, I was pumped. LOL what an Idiot! Anyway, I heard a rumor that Kyle Kempt was calling some/a lot of plays last year. Anybody have any insight into this? Relaying off of the reply above, with the total lack of P5 coaching prior to their ISU gigs, I'd think that having a D1 QB calling plays would be a huge thing. Thoughts?

Granted the D was **** today, but let’s not float past the fact that without Breece making out of his ass runs and Kolar and Breece being super human, this O would be ****. That was proved today as we were basically shut down against a bad TTU team.
The guy needs to go. With the talent we have this year, it’s a ******* joke this guy is still allowed to call plays.
Tom Manning led offenses this season, have scored 30 or more points in 7 games this year.

That is just fine. He is not the issue. Our D being totally flatfooted the whole first half was a notable issue though. We scored 38 today and people want to rip the O. I do not get it.

Did you actually watch the product on the field? Anyone who actually watches the first half of that game (or almost any game this year) can't possibly say that our offense is being called well.

Sick of people saying the defense needs to play better. The defense needs a few tweaks, but itd be nice if for once the offense put the team in a good position or bailed out the defense.

We scored 38 points today. Offense was a problem in the 1st half. The defense was even worse. I realize Manning is the fan base's favorite whipping boy, but our two worst losses involved absolute defensive meltdowns against West Virginia and Texas Tech.
The problem is Manning struggles in the first half quite a bit. This is becoming a pattern. Heck he could even do jack against a crap Texas defense in the first half. Mannings play calling on that last sequence is why we had to kick a FG instead of a TD. No one is ever open and individuals have to make great plays for us to move the chains often.

I dont think they are checked out. I think maybe they let some ego creep in, and maybe got a little too set in their ways. And that is human nature. Not a criticism. They are young guys, mistakes are going to be made.

I worry Tom just has a ceiling and this is it. While being overly conservative, he doesn’t have the real creative streak that good OC’s need. My observation is he keeps having the same problems, particularly they clock management issues is glaring and a constant issue. I don’t see constant improvement in anything we do. One poster commented on slow developing routes, and I think that is right. We end up playing in offense in about a 10 yard square box. Tech, or any good offense, uses the whole field now, we don’t.

the other thing is, sure defense has had issues here, but constantly one side of the ball is not ready to play in the first half, and it is offense. I can’t remember the last new wrinkle we saw, a new formation, or a new play out of an old formation we show a lot. I guess you could say Xavier throwing the ball, but that’s just a trick play, it isn’t a new thing you have to really prepare for.
I watched Ole Miss last night, man oh man, I would love to have that type of scheme and play calling. They do so many little things to gain an advantage. For example they have a hand off technique on running plays that gets the defense to set their foot in one direction, the technique (is so simple)is basically a misdirection play, but is is so subtle. There was a lot of confusing misdirecting blocking going on too. We look like such simple amateurs compared to them.

Now do the part where Ole Miss has the players to do that.

Hopefully he gets the record at least.. thats the only bright spot on offense so far..
That should be a priority for the next two games. Looks like it may be time to make my reservation at the Peabody Hotel. I’m ready to eat some Memphis barbecue.

been saying all year, Manning is terrible play caller and game plan, Campbell needs to forget friendship and put him on the bus out of town
