Bob Bowlsby says CFB playoff expansion NOT what's best for the sport. Why openly advocate against the thing best for the Big 12 teams? We only keep financial viability and relevance with an automatic qualifier.

Looks to me like he's trying to argue for 12 instead of 8, which gives you both automatic qualifiers and a decent amount of at larges. Still dumb way to approach it if that's what he's doing.

8 teams with 5 AQ is what's best for the Big12. To go to 12 teams helps the SEC separate themselves further by getting a bigger chunk of the CFP pie. Only way 12 should be considered is if the payouts are set are not tied to the at large qualifiers.
This. If we go to 12, nothing appears to indicate that the SEC won’t continue to get the favorable nod. And if they do, they’ll get more at large bids than every other conference, including the Big Ten.

If money remains directly tied to appearances, under a 12 team playoff, I imagine we would see the SEC gain material advantages (both fiscal and competitive) and run away from the rest of college football altogether.

Yes, I agree with 8. 5 AQ for power 5, 1 in nonpower 5, plus 2 at-large. Why water it down by going so extreme to 4 all the way to 12? If you go to 12, there will be 'very very little' interest in any nonplayoff bowls, which has lessened recently the way it is.

People - relax. It's all part of the "game."

Bob was on the original group of four (Bowlsby, sec commish, Pac12 and acc commish) that recommended going from 4 to 12 and the final vote to be the first week in August until the ouut story broke.

Everybody is negotiating. If the big 12 is going to sue ESPN, etc., does he just lay down?

I have no inside information, but please don't jump to conclusions until u have all the facts.

Relax. It’s pretty unlikely big12 would not be one of the top six best conference champions. Plus you have to get the group of five onboard if you want changes before the current contract is up.

I think this is pretty simple. Prior to the SEC was exposed for poaching teams, everyone was OK with 12.

The SEC and maybe the Big10 still want to go to 12 to maximize their amount of teams in.

The other conferences now want 8 with 5 AQ so it’s not just a playoff full of SEC teams. But of course they cannot say that because then there is nowhere to negotiate to between 8 and 12. The wonderful art of negotiation.

Honestly probably one of the few things Bowlsby has done OK with.

Longer this drags out and gets stagnated, the more pressure the b12 has in drilling the opposition in the lawsuits.
