What I Don't Understand...

I think the frustration is just caused by a little bit of impatience. It's okay to compare this team to teams in the past, and say hey......look what happened last year....but that really doesn't help much. All of us want these teams to get better from year to year, and advance farther, and for the program to get stronger and stronger. So, reaching the same levels that were done the year before or whatever are really not satisfying enough. We want the program to get to the point that it wins a majority of their conference (and non-conference) games on the road, and ALWAYS protects the home court.....no matter who the opponent might be.

It is only January though, only 3 conference games have been played, and if we have learned anything.....CFH's teams generally improve as the season goes along. I think this group probably has as high of a basketball IQ as any of Fred's teams have had, and I believe they will figure it out. As always, there are several new pieces that still need to gel with each other, and I have to believe they will.

Oh for god's sake. Again, we are 12-3. Ranked #11 in the country. This is not a type of team that needs to 'figure it out' exactly.

Also, the type of team that wins the majority of the their conference games on the road and ALWAYS protects it's home court? Is probably like 5 programs in the country. Duke has lost 2 games in a row, one at home. North Carolina lost to Iowa. Two years ago Kentucky sucked. Kansas is as close as probably any team to that standard and even they have lost games.

In the last 3 years, we have lost twice at home and one of those was stolen from us. So really, we've lost once at home.

I swear that some of you probably need to look at other teams and history before you make dumb statements like this one. It's OK to want that and hope for that. But to expect it? When it happens to only elite teams and not every year? That's silly and stupid.

People are frustrated because we beat ourselves last night. Corn said so himself on the Fanatic radio show tonight and I agree with him. I'm not down on the team at all though.

I think that as a lifetime Cyclone fan like many folks on here there is a lot of emotion pinned up in every game. We are all waiting for the kick to the nuts and anything like this can set it off... Interestingly enough I have many friends in Atlanta who are Georgia, Bama, VT etc fans who feel the exact same way. I always tell them that they have no idea what the #($&$ they are talking about. This is a team that can go all the way, it hurts to see tons of missed free throws. I want it for myself, the fans and the players who did me the favor of playing for ISU.

But while we are waiting for the kick to the nuts, are we missing the fun?

I'm not immune to this, but I spent 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 not enjoying the wins. Constantly worrying about the losses doesn't make them hurt any less, but it sure as hell makes the good times not as good.

Since I can watch more games now I really become more interested in the teams. I really want to make it to a game in Hilton this season. Maybe if Miami joins the Big 12 I'll be able to see them every year!

I think you have a serious problem with your reading comprehension.

Yes, few teams always win at home and win a majority of their road games, but that does not mean that many ISU fans (if not most) would like to see ISU develop into one of those programs, does it? You wouldn't like to see ISU become another Kansas in the Big 12, or at least be a major rival to them? So what if Duke has lost a couple of games, or that UNC lost to Iowa at home? Why not want ISU to be better than either of those programs? Kentucky and Virginia haven't lost any games yet. Does that mean we shouldn't wish that ISU could have the success those programs are having?

My point is that there is some frustration because as fans we want things to get better, and we want it right away......but in reality that is going to take some time. And yes.....there are some things that this team needs to figure out......just as the teams in recent years have had to figure some things out. But as I said, I think they are as capable as any ISU team in the past of doing that.

We were 2-3 to start the big 12 season last year. That ended up being one of the most fun seasons of my life. No need to ever panic in basketball.

Last years team was no where close to winning the regular season title, which is the stated goal by Fred and his players this year. Most believe this team has a higher ceiling than even last years team, and with that comes expectations. Conference champs don't lose too many like last night, so it's disappointing, and we're better than Baylor. Will have much tougher road games at Texas, KU, OU, OSU, and even K-State.

If this team is as good as we hope, we should realistically expect to win the next 5.

...is why a percentage of the fan base is really upset with the loss yesterday. We lost to a ranked team on the road by 1 point. Big whoop, get over it.

(Normally I wouldn't post a thread over this, but I felt inclined to share my thoughts)

Now they say "well, the effort wasn't there" and "they let a team blow them out from the start of the first half and the end of it". I don't get this, last years team had quite a few double digit comebacks, this team had two double digit comebacks IN ONE GAME. How can you question that effort? Someone kicks you, you get back up, they kick you again, and you get back up again. I applaud that.

For those who recently jumped on the bandwagon, you may not remember that Hoiberg's 2nd and 3rd teams had to mesh around this time. They did, and we went dancing. Last years team meshed from the start, which was lucky.

All I'm saying is calm down, and just enjoy the ride. Go Cyclones.

Expectations! We're transitioning to a big-time program and we're developing big-boy expectations.

I'm upset because it is a set back in the trying to win the conference title. That and I hate losing.

Good post. Passion and winning seems to make a fan want all that much more, but we have to be sensible and handle success too. I'm even okay with people being frustrated or picking certain game things apart. However, if its the same people coming on here predicting that we go 15-3 or that we better not lose to a team like Baylor, etc. etc. etc., and then they come out and bash players when it doesn't come true, well that's just disgusting. Did the Colts or Packers put forth the better effort and wanted it more than Denver or Dallas? No! Good teams played, and somebody had to lose. Discussing some weaknesses, maybe a little strategy, even officiating seems okay for a message board, but attacking players based on no insight that they didn't "want it enough" or "poor effort" is just plain wrong. You're being selfish and I question whether you know what its like to work your butt off to be a successful Div.1 athlete. This team is a brotherhood and fought their butts off twice to erase big deficits. "Dang, we had a great opportunity slip by" but nothing else should be keeping us from being anything but proud and supportive of this team.

I was about as angry as I've been after a game yesterday, but it wasn't because I was disappointed in our guys. It was just because of exactly what you said: We lost to a ranked team on the road....BARELY. That is the part that is hard to swallow. What an opportunity.

I agree with the overreaction being ridiculous though. If anyone thinks this game has any negative foreshadowing on the rest of the season I'm guessing you're new to Hoiball. Has there even been a team under Hoiberg that didn't start really clicking until midway through conference season? Remember how good last year's team ended up being? They were only ranked 16 going into the Big XII tournament. The AP already seems to think we're better than that.

I'm upset because we're struggling against teams(SC, WVU, Baylor) I didn't expect to struggle against and watching those games see we shouldn't be struggling. Any L to the middle of the pack makes it even harder and more important to beat OU, KU and Tejas if we want the regular season title.

Reading the player tweets last night I got the feeling they to knew they could have played better and it shouldn't have come down to a 1 point (come from 15 back) game.

I don't want people to think that it's not okay to be upset because that's not what I meant. Being upset means you have passion and that you're a true fan. I was saying that overreaction is not warranted because Fred's track record shows we'll be fine.

Gary Parish really punished us in his top 25 and 1 poll, obviously he has no faith in ISU. He moved us from #9 to #9.

I agree that being upset is good. Hopefully we are all upset about losing, but it isn't a reason to start trashing players or think the sky is falling.

The loss was frustrating to watch because it was a very attainable win, and it felt like some fundamentals like rebounding and defense were a big difference in the outcome.

I think the team still has a big upswing; I'm fascinated that a Fred Hoiberg-coached team can't hit free throws consistently.
