Well, it had to happen sometime....

I have been an Iowa State fan for 34 years.

My first spoken sentence was to respond "hate those Hawks" after I was asked "what does Cy say?"

My parents potty trained me by putting a Herkie the Hawk sticker on the bottom of the toilet and encouraging me to give him what he deserves.

I have missed one football game since I was seven years old, and that was because my little sister scheduled her wedding around future in-laws traveling rather than the Oklahoma football game that we almost won in 2007. And even then, I only skipped the game because my parents informed me of where they'd hide the pieces of the body if I did miss my sister's wedding for football (their priorities were a little skewed, I think even they'd admit in retrospect)

But, this year, I've been sick for the last about 9 months straight. Long story short, I'm just starting to get well again, and I cannot in good conscience make the decision to put myself at risk by standing outside in single digit weather.

I'm sad that I can't be there to support the team and especially the seniors who have poured their everything into the team I love for the last 4 or 5 years.

I'm pretty depressed that I had to make this decision.....

Your health is more important than being at the football game. Watch it from the comfort of your home and be well!

Get better. If you have to miss a piece of Iowa State history, coldest game in Jack Trice would be a good choice.

That's the kind of dedication I admire. Stay home and keep warm.

I'll be there cheering them on extra loudly.

Get better soon. I will cheer extra loud for you.

That's all I ask. Cheer hard for me.

Oh, and also, when he gets on the big screen, if someone could yell, as loud as they can, to tell John McGlaughlin to shut up, I'd be grateful.

Same for us...I'll be buried in Carrhardts that are six sizes too big...maybe only my nose will show...but I'll throw out an extra holler for you. Hope your path to health continues. :)

Try this to get that ISU experience at home.

1) eat a walking taco.

2) down a couple hot chocolates and schnapps.

3) stick you head in the freezer and scream as loud as you can while someone behind you kicks you in the nuts.

4) cry in your pillow (optional)

Do you live in Ames or the immediate area? Perhaps getting into a warm car and doing a drive by would satisfy the football gods...or at least make you feel like you were there in a way.

The suggestion was made to me by my father (who is an even better supporter of the program than I am, ask CWilly) that I use the tickets to come into the game, cheer for the pregame, then head home before I get too cold. I was considering it, but then a facebook friend claimed the tickets from me.

I refused to let my seats go empty, and refuse to take money for them, so it was nice to find someone willing to brave the cold.
