And that is running the fball. This program under McCarney and even earlier was known for having pretty salty RBs and a decent Oline. CPR made the decision to go with the flow and turn us into a spread and our offense since has been awful. It is too hard to recruit all that we need to run a good spread at ISU, it's hard enough recruiting at ISU. You have to have double the good players to run a good spread than a traditional run based offense. Just an observation. It's too late to change now. I do think if we keep this staff intact for another 3-5 years we will see a really good offense and that means MM staying.

On a side note, am I the only one that would like to see Syria run the ball 15 times a game?

I hate the spread, but if we are going to stick with it we need to change it up to something like Auburn's Offense. Auburn has a spread O and they run the ball all the time.

Gimmick offenses make recruiting quality players harder, not easier. That's like re-running the Walden experiment.

We were way better up front on both sides of the ball when DMAC was here. We have been aweful in that area under CPR, particularly on defense. People rave about Shane Burnham but his lines have been aweful. DMAC had guys like Tyson Smith, James Reed, Nick Leaders, Jordan Carstens, Jason Berryman, and Brett Curvey.

I would love to see an offense similar to KSU. Put the emphasis on recruiting road grader lineman (not light and quick) and let the OL dictate the flow of the offensive game. When you have a very good OL you don't need top notch skill players, they are nice to have however.

Defenses today are too fast compared to the era where triple option won titles. Those teams (94,95 Nebraska) also had one of the best OLs of all time.

I think certain aspects of triple option could be effective but not an offense built on it.

A better issue to talk about would be quarterback play. And no I'm not talking about SR needing to go. I think our QB play when ISU was successful in football was the reason under DMAC. To have a spread offense you need an accurate QB, period.

We changed the type of OL we recruited from larger more power based, to smaller and more athletic. This has not worked out in our favor.

Agreed. That's why I would like to see a system similar to KSU. Emphasis is on recruiting and developing very good OLs and finding skill guys to fit the system. OL recruitment and development under CPR appears to not get the focus it should. ISU will never win the recruiting battle for skill guys but ISU can be very competitive in recruiting OL with a run first system.

yeah, but you still have to be able to run, and we are inaccurate on deep balls. Further inhibiting our offense are the short throws which are mostly too high. Our most effective plays are intermediate throws. I think the goal should be a balanced Offense, but right now we need to spread it out and run an air raid type offense. Maybe we can get someone deep so wide open Sam doesn't need to loft it over a defender.
