Reading comprehension. I didn't say one word about Hoiball. What I spoke of is the ability to learn from other highly successful coaches. It's not rocket science.
Holding KU to 37 points in 2nd half and OT was as impressive as anything. Typically, that doesn't happen in Lawrence, especially after giving up 52 in the first. We were active defensively, got some tips and thought our ballscreen defense caused a lot of disruption.
It's easy for some people on here to question Prohm's coaching ability, as if they have the first clue on what it takes to run a major D1 basketball program. They make it out to be, "hey all we gotta do is A, B and C and we will win". Is Prohm perfect? No, and I would bet my house he would be the first to tell you that he hasn't always called the right play or had correct rotations, etc...
If nothing else, yesterday showed the players haven't given up on each other and r still buying in to what Prohm is teaching.

Does anyone else see a comparison between ISU's football season this year with ISU's basketball season in how the head coaches had to figure out how to use... Lanning in the case of football.... and Holden/Young in basketball?
In football, by the end of the season they finally had figured out it was best to use Park until we got inside the red zone, and then it was ok to mix Lanning in some at that point.
In basketball, we went from starting Holden at the beginning of the year, to basically going to a 4 guard lineup with Burton as the "5", and now I feel like Prohm is finally settling on the fact that we NEED to at least have an inside presence of some kind in the game.... whether it's Holden or Young, we need someone in there that is taller than Burton at 6'4".

To the people who think Prohm isn't evolving he himself stated that he needed to get better at coaching last year. He talked about studying up on different defensive strategies and he routinely references high end statistics, much like Hoiberg does. I think he is definitely evolving, I just think he doesn't have the right players to evolve into what he really wants to do. He is using what he has got, and that is my favorite strength in a coach. Don't try to force a square peg into a round hole. Be humble and learn from your mistakes. Respect your culture. Penetrate the lane and find the open man. He is keeping it simple because he doesn't have time to re educate these guys. He is trying to win right now. I'm strongly behind him because not only do I think he will prove to be a great coach, but he has surely proven to be a man of great character, and I deeply respect him for this.
Put me down in the Prohm has made me a believer category. I am on record as supporting a different name when we made the hire. I think Coach Prohm is going to have many more great teams and wins at Iowa State. The guy's coaching takes me back to the LE teams that won the Big 12. He gets the players to work on defense and has a definite style he wants his team to play. I like watching his basketball. It is all still a work in progress, and that is OK.
I miss the good old days of Hoibergs first two seasons and all of the posts ripping his game management and lack of experience.

Then Hoiberg went from "sucks" to being elevated to godlike deity above reproach. Of course Hoiberg never really sucked but he for certain is no basketball deity.
I remain cautiously optimistic about coach Prohm. We were a little lucky to shoot lights out yesterday but we have been unlucky on previous last possession chances in some of those Top 10 losses. But when you're lucky it is just luck and when you're unlucky it's bad coaching is a constant mantra on CF.

Rhoads was emotional and wanted to be here too. I'm not saying Prohm isn't the guy but caring isn't the only factor.
I find it ironic that this thread comes out after a win at the phog. After Tuesdays WVU debacle, most were ready to chase him out of town.
I do not agree that this win means he is evolving in any way. However I am also not one who was on the Prohm hate bandwagon either. The guy did a fine job last year, and he's doing a fine job this year.
Our players were making shots yesterday. Really the only difference from Tuesday. When our players go cold again, it will be back to the Prohm blame game

They did hold KU to 30 points in the 2nd half and I think KU has been held to 30 points in a half only one other time this year.
I'm waiting to see what Prohm's offense looks like next season. Defensively, we are only one big man away from being exceptional, but there continues to be a whole lot of standing around on offense. Yesterday was one of the best days to be a Cyclone in awhile, but our offense comes down to our ability to hit the three point shot. While that is no different than a lot of years under Fred, we have no ball movement.
It's difficult to go hard on both ends of the court for a full game unless you are going 10 deep and rotating guys and then you can lose continuity and game flow on the offensive end anyway. When the defensive intensity ratchets up in a game it can lead to turnovers and easy hoops but it can also lead to guys looking tired and "resting" on offense in half court sets. This isn't going to be as dramatic as the shift from Orr to Tim Floyd but it's likely to be more D and less O going forward under Prohm.
Coaching is at least 80% recruiting/player development. I think we will learn more about Prohm next year than this year.
However, we can look at Burton's development. This is Burton's first year having a major role and he is improving on both sides of the ball as the season goes on. Nader made a big jump at the end of last season too.

Here is one thing I got out of yesterday's game as far as CSP. We had a 3-point lead with 7 seconds or so and Fran was saying "I think Iowa State will foul so no 3-point shot can go up."
But Prohm did the right thing, and maybe not for the reasons we all know too well. But I give him credit anyway, he did not foul. If we foul, Kansas makes the first free throw, misses the 2nd one and gets the rebound (by shoving our guys out of the way) and scores and we have a tie game. Even if we did get the rebound, the refs would automatically call a foul on ISU and at least KU gets two more free throws to try for the tie. Let's face it, the Big 12 did not want us to beat KU yesterday. And I understand why, they want Kansas to get that #1 seed. They always do.
Now, did CSP analyze all that the way I just did? Maybe not. But whatever his reason, he did the right thing in that situation against that team.
