Unfortunately, I agree with much of what the OP has stated. But this fact cannot be understated - the footprint of Kinnick is tiny as hell. It is the small, brick, litter box that absolutely JAMS everyone together like an airplane. It is extremely uncomfortable and claustrophobic - there is a very logical reason why their fans are standing, loud, and generally agitated and restless the entire game. And, a lot of their fans are just loud arrogant pricks too. That matters.
I hate to say it - but their giant-ass pressbox (that is way too big for a turd box of a stadium like that) looks fantastic. As does their new endzone remodel, with the multiple levels. It looks "big time" on TV during night games.
Even with a lot of upgrades over the years, I personally feel Jack Trice still has a 'small time' feel to it. Just my opinion. I have been going to games since the early 90's. My win-the-lottery x10 dream would be to build a new stadium with proper, more vertical stands, getting the spectators as close to the action as possible.

There's a reason a lot of people think the Iowa game is one of the worst to attend every other year as their obnoxious fans roll into town and make the environment much less pleasant, from the tailgating lots to the game. Though that's been decreasing inside the stadium as more ISU fans hold onto those tickets.
The first half of the BYU game showed what it can be. Consistently loud where it affects the game. And then the second half was back to what we usually see where it is only loud on 3rd down.

College football is a dying sport so im not surprised if people aren't that enthusiastic to go to games anymore. It's also extremely expensive and easier to just watch it in the comfort of my living room.
Kinnick is naturally a louder venue. That is a fact. It has built in advantages. Of course they have the great end zones, but in addition to the stadium starting closer to the sideline, they alsohave a steeper incline putting the fans on top of you. The incline on our lower decks are gradual. This sets the fans further from the field. Not condusive to trap sound inside the stadium. With a steeper incline on the lower deck, it puts the upper decks more on top of the field rather than away from the field. Really, Jack Trice is a poorly desigend stadium. But it can still get loud though, it just take more effort from the fans to make it happen. The loudest I heard it is the 2005 Iowa game. The crowd smelled blood that day, even before the kickoff they were loud. OSU in 2011 is right up there too.
Honestly, you’re right. I’m probably letting 2011 Iowa influence my memory a bit too much. That was one of the best atmospheres I’ve ever been in. I’m also comparing the rowdiness of the student section to where I’ve sat in the last few years, which isn’t fair.
Maybe late 2010s is a better example. 2017 TCU and 2019 Texas were both great ones I was there for. I’ll take your word for it though, sounds like you’ve been to many more than I have over the last 5.

I think for BYU the crowd difference in the first half and the second half was that the late TD with 25 seconds left in the half brought out the feeling that the game was about to slip away. Unfortunately, it was.
