WBB Recruiting continued...

Follow along with me here. Coach Fennelly has said that they have limited resources and they can't spend those resources chasing recruits that they likely will not get. I can't believe that he is going to fly to California to make an offer to a mediocre player. So it made sense to me to start with players with a connection to Kelsey Harris. If you are spending the time and resources to go that far you better be fairly confident that you are going to get a good player. All that being said this is 100% circumstantial. However if you look at the top uncommitted players for 2011 in California that played in a game on senior night Feb. 9th in Orange County it's pretty hard to come to any other conclusion.

I agree with your reasoning (and I of course agree it's all circumstantial). I think if she had actually committed we would have heard something by now, so I'm thinking either it wasn't Samuelson or the person who told JCloned about the committment was mistaken.

Everything about Samuelson makes her sound like a really good fit for ISU. It would be great if she ended up here.

If I remember the story right, he really wanted the job but ISU didn't give him much consideration. When Becker left three years later, he tried again with much better results.

That's what I thought. I was impressed by Fennelly back then and remember thinking to myself when they hired Becker that they may have overlooked a really good one in Fennelly. Thankfully we still had a shot at Fennelly when Becker left.

RE: Emily Cady, Seward, NE - Is there any indication of how she is leaning? She is the best player for Seward which is the best team in Nebraska Class B (second largest) - reportedly great on defense, scoring and assists. Reportedly has an offer from Yori and other D1 coaches have been seen at her games. If she is a possible, I'll try to catch some state tourney games. This is not a good year to be competing for a Nebraska girl - the local press for NU is incredible.

I expect quite a parade of "name" coaches in Wells Fargo Arena this week with Stokes, Greenfield, Stubbs, Wright, etc. playing.

Here's some more links to the CA kids

Varsity Player Details : OC Varsity

Spartans victorious | seeded, division, villa - Sports - OC Varsity

Villa Park now faces Kesley Harris' Brea Olinda in the finals.

Girls' basketball: Brea Olinda proves too much for Ventura Ventura County Star

Thanks for the post. I see some good news here in that Kelsey Harris hit five threes against a team that would appear to be pretty good, based on the story context.

No secret as to where BF is today:

There is so much information here and so many good players. My head hurts. I admire the coaches for being able to make sense of it all and sift through the masses to find the ones that fit BF's system. Seems daunting to me. Glad we got Prins out of CO - maybe another Top 60 from CO this year.....

In the mid-80's Wettig had as many as three Wisconsin recruits at a time twice during that period. Names like Jane Lobenstein, Tracy Horvath and Coyle. We had lesser WI talents from Cuba City, Portage and several from Milwaukee, too.

With Fennelly's appearance we haven't had one that I can think of from Wisconsin. Maybe Fenn has tried. Maybe it's hard within the Big Ten's area. But, why has there been a 20-year drought from the Dairy State despite its proximity to Ames?

Alex Cohen maybe the highest-rated (possible) WI recruit for ISU since Coyle (I think), I've heard of in connection with our recruiting efforts.

During the BF tenure, it seems there has been shifting regional focus (out side of Iowa). At times it looked like we were in the Dakotas, Minn., Mo. An area focus makes sense - our coaches get to know the hs and club coaches and kids on the summer teams. In football, e.g., some coaches are regarded as specializing in recruiting certain states. Now we have a more national scope, though Schroll may be the eastern most recruit I can recall.

If it was a different coach the sporadic-looking recruiting would worry me little. With BF, it just makes me think that he is confident that we have a developed enough of a national reputation to allow him to go into other regions and get who he wants.

While it makes sense to recruit in those states that are contiguous with Iowa, it is also good that we can also recruit in those states with a large population, such as Texas and Calif. and be competitive. In this latter regard, we are like the football team which also recruits those two states.
I think another factor is the shifting number of talented high school players: not surprisingly, it appears that states contiguous with Iowa vary in talent from year to year. Four or five years ago, we had three or four players from Minn., but with Nis's graduation, we now have zero; that change may be simply due to the talent level in Minn. the past couple of years.
I do wonder why we don't recruit a bit more further east, as some earlier post noted. We have Jessica from Mich., but we have had no one since Mary Fox from further east, if my memory serves; maybe Coach Fenn has been away from the Ohio area so long that his contacts there are few, who knows?
