18-19 Texas - Broken Leg
19-20 Oregon - Forced sit out for transfer (Cam Rising rule gives this year back)
20-21 Oregon - Covid
21-22 Oregon - Played
22-23 Oregon - Elbow surgery
23-24 TCU - Played
24-25 TCU - Played

I think she actually could've
And yet in their infinite wisdom the NCAA would not give Suares a covid year because she was injured, red shirted, and did not play that year. Where's the consistancy? Where's the logic?

I've said this many times but I'll say it again -- the NCAA absolutely DID apply their rules consistently in her case (and others). The COVID year was a free year. Play, don't play, whatever, it doesn't count. She had the bad luck of being injured that year, but that is the rule.

Agree - but I would have to look in more detail but I think Rory Harmon got a red shirt year for last year and may have played more games than Steph did. That was her only hope even though she did not meet the criteria as written.

Harmon played 12 games last year. Soares played one more…13. I believe that one game was all the difference for Soares.

It seems like the NCAA has very recently gotten more lenient with the medical hardships. I think the difference might be less about 12 games vs 13 games and more about the change in environment from 2023 to 2024 (with respect to student-athlete rights). The hardship limit is usually 30% of games rounding up (counting only one conf tournament game and zero postseason tournament games). For most basketball players that's 10 games.

It’s stuck somewhere in my head that the discussion two years ago said she had ONE too many games.

I believe this was it. Iowa State was trying to argue to not count the game she got hurt since she only played like 4 minutes. NCAA didn't budge

What sticks in my head is the lack of any logic by the NCAA that if you actually played during the covid year you got a fifth year, but if you red shirted that year you did not! You played so you got an extra year although you only missed a few games. Miss the entire season and you don't get that extra year.
