Way Too Early Cyclone 2023 Draft Prospects

Hutchinson might get drafted before McDonald
I was once high on Hutchinson's Draft stock. I just don't know how I feel about it now, with him coming back. If he was good enough to go, it seems like he would've gone by now. Not sure what it is he's lacking that scouts are looking for. If I had to guess, maybe top end speed and vertical, but again, I am guessing. Don't really know how he'd measure in those areas.

But all the same for McDonald, no?

Not exactly. McDonald has some tangible things to work on to possibly get himself into the 2nd or 1st (long shot) round. Putting on good weight, improving against the run etc, as others have mentioned.

McDonald coming back is about getting a bigger pay day with a higher pick. Not sure where he was projecting this year, but it goes without saying you make more the higher you get picked. I suppose in Hutchinson's case, the same could apply, I just don't know how you make someone jump higher or run faster. I'm sure things can be done to improve in those areas, but they seem more like natural physical limitation type of things.

McDonald came back in large part to a hefty (for ISU) NIL package too, IIRC. Not sure if X has something similar lined up or not.

McDonald and I think Hutchinson in the later rounds are the only guys that will be drafted.

McDonald will be 24 by the time he plays a snap in the NFL... He is not likely to go round 1.

Outside of Dekkers having an INSANE year. I don't see a first round player on the roster. We don't have that when young, athletic freaks at QB, WR, DL, and CB.

I do think there are A LOT of NFL guys on the roster though. Highest odds to make the first round would probably be JJ Kohl, and he has yet to play his senior year of high school. The streak will go on for awhile...

2023 NFL Draft:
OL - Downing will be a day 3, with day 2 upside. Hufford playing guard could get a look. Dark horse is Remsburg
RB - Brock could go Day 3 with a MASSIVE year
QB - ISU has a dream season if Dekkers go to the NFL in 2023. Not likely
TE - Low prob
WR - Hutch has day 2 upside, likely day 3 without more speed

DL - McDonald late round 2 and Lee late day 3
LB - low prob
CB - low prob
S - AJ Jr. - Day 3 age being the biggest restraint

I think Isaiah Lee has a chance
I’m just not sure there. Guys at his size usually don’t fare as well at the next level. Plus being more of a run stuffing specialist it limits his role.

I don’t think Will being 24 will hurt too much. But that’s just me

Would X have a chance to improve stock if Dekkers is able to stretch the field a little more - maybe he gets more deep balls and chances to compile some significant numbers? Or is his downside in other simpler areas (size, reliability, YAC?)

Disclosure: I am NOT a good analyzer of draft potential/qualities.

Will needs to improve his run defense in order to make the 1st round. I'd say mid-late 2nd round right now. X is probably 5th or 6th round. His 40 time might be a big factor if he is gonna go higher than that. He doesn't get great seperation but is good with the ball in his hands and can make contested catches.

Johnson is 6th or 7th round, if he does get drafted. The 2023 draft is gonna be loaded with talented safeties.

Downing I could definitely see going late. Moving to center may even improve his draft stock.

Everyone else is most likely UDFAs. Lee could end up sticking somewhere. Same with Vance.

I don't think they'll need a QB. Corner and interior o-line will be huge needs.
Sounds right. They declined the 5th year option on Bradbury, although they could still sign him after the season if he steps uphis game in the new system. WR could also be an option.

Will doesn't grade as well in the run game as he does in the pass game that probably needs to be his biggest area of improvement to move past mid/late R2.
So many of you guys keep saying this, but NFL guys don’t really care. They think that if a guy is a good enough athlete, their coaches can coach him up.

If Will can put on ten pounds or more, it then depends on how he tests.
