Water Softeners

I'm looking into buying a water softener and am wondering if anyone has tried a descaler type instead of using the actual salt or potassium grain ones. Do they work?

Even if that does work it won't "filter" any of the hard water ions in your water. In fact, you would end up with slightly more as they would not be crystallizing on your pipes.
