I thought that he might play more of a role. Turns out he's really just a picture of the overall tragedy. Too alone to live, but the living didn't want to take a chance on him.

Yeah, it would have to be rough for anyone alone. Could be alone because the rest of your group died, and then youre pretty much doomed because almost nobody is going to take you in because by this point everyone has been burned too many times by the times they let people in.

I looked at them passing the hiker up as "We already have barely enough supplies for our group, plus a baby, and our group dynamic is very shaky. Why introduce another brand new person?"
 
I'd totes steal a house boat and live on a huge body of water.
You know, with a veggie garden on board and plenty of fishing equipment could be alright. Well, except for that whole storm possibility thing. Then again, could just anchor a few hundred yards from shore...

People tried that in the book World War Z and the zombies came from under water and somehow floated to the boats, submerging them and killing everyone.
