I live in Urbandale, just north of the golf course. In fact, my backyard overlooks one of the fairways.

Haven’t seen any coyotes but crossed paths with 3 fox a few weeks ago while walking the dog early morning.

Saw another one crossing Aurora, heading down to the creek by a park. It’s been years since I’ve seen just one!

Really? Are there that many incidents of coyotes attacking or killing large dogs? I've heard of plenty of small dogs getting grabbed.
I know a guy who lost a German Short Hair hunting dog to a lone coyote. The DNR person up here told me to kill the coyote because she was tired of the calls about it. He stood in his yard and saw his dog disappear. 35-40 pound dog.

Wow, that's surprising to me. That's a crazy aggressive coyote.

My sister and her husband own a Mountain Cur dog they bought when living in Roy, Montana. . Mountain Curs are about 40 pounds. Initially bred to hunt squirrels. Now they have another use, they love to be decoys for hunting coyotes. Theses dogs are fast. My point is coyotes do kill dogs, that is why this decoy process works. You tube videos, "Doggin with Levi" is one of my brother in laws friends. It shows how the process works.

Not exactly sure.
Not only year round, but you can use trucks, cb radios, and higher powered rifles to hunt them. You aren't supposed to spotlight them but you can use night vision gear. The state is fine with you killing as many as you want.
Had a guy ask me if he could hunt a farm for them. He showed me his night vision kill of one 400 yards out.

I heard yesterday from a neighbor that a mountain lion has recently been spotted here in the Laplands.

What do you call an urban myth when it's out in the country?

As for coyotes, yes, we have tons. They have chased the dog, stalked baby pigs in the pasture (super clever strategy, too, working in pairs and running the momma ragged until she slipped up and lost track of one...), and we once saw one catch a chicken in the yard in broad daylight.
Been a few mountain lions in NC Iowa. If they made it here, they could make southern Iowa.

I live in Ankeny and saw a coyote on the grounds of Crocker elementary. There is a cosp of trees on the north side and I think one has puppies back there. One morning about 5:30 a guy let his lab loose on the grounds, which he does all the time because he lives right there, and that coyote came out of the trees and was aggressive towards that lab. I saw the whole thing play out. Just a few days ago I went for a walk after dark and walked around the school and saw the coyote again. And again another guy was out there with his dog. He kept his dog at a distance but that coyote wasn’t happy.

My wife read that someone a woman was walking her dog at Sawgrass park and saw a coyote. A man approached her and said he had shot at it. Police were investigating but I don’t think it was investigating the coyote.
