Carr: He is a Junior world champ and has accolades like crazy. Flo was just waiting to have a folkstyle reason to put him top 3, and they have that now. Young, based off 2 wins at end of the season, should be over Diekin. Carr should be above Young. Rankings, at the current moment, are fun but mean nothing more than that.

Gomez: Medical redshirt would be all but assured. He suffered from some issues during his redshirt campaign, and now this year. If they sit him the year, it is a high likelihood he would get the year back. Like anything else with the NCAA, there are no guarantees, but they have been handing them out like crazy the last couple of seasons.

Overall, not having Gomez hurts the team's abilities at Big 12's and NCAA's. But, concussions aren't something to mess around with and the probability of a hardship is high.

While I agree that Gomez would likely get a year back, I’m not sure if it matters. Repeat concussion issues are nothing to mess with. If he’s already having to miss a whole year, he may never see the mat again.

While I agree, none of us truly know how serious this concussion issue is, and we shouldn't know either. Keep that in house. I hope he is back this year, but just not planning on it. Getting him in the lineup will be an unexpected bonus at this point for me.

He'll have two big things working against him:
*Asking for a 6th year
*He competed in the second half of his redshirt season (Jan/Feb)

Asking for the 6th year is the norm now. For example, Michael Kemerer will be asking for one this coming off-season due to last year. Cassar from PSU received 1 (and possibly a 2nd?).

Gomez only wrestled for a 2-week period, which guys have done before. That won't hold it back IMO. He wrestled Jan 20, Jan 27 and Feb 3. Guys have competed more dates than that and gotten a year back.

Cassar got 2 back and Rasheed got 1.

Hate to say it but I’ve written off Gomez for this year. Tough to make a decent cut to 133 with his issues. Hope he’s doing well mentally and in school. I have a stud athlete nephew who’s concussion issues centered around school and behavior have been plaguing him for 6+ months now. Thank god he's finally getting help. This stuff is no joke.

Can't like that enough about Gomez. Hopefully it means he can compete this season.

That’s a loaded field. Good chance to pick up some quality W’s!!

I suffered 2 concussions in hs football, 4 in wrestling (twice in matches were i lost, twice in practice)

I hate too say this but i carried on fron the concussions and did not tell anybody. I dont have headaches or had lingering problems like Ed Banach or Lincoln McIlravy. I feel fortunate.

There has been a few very good college wrestlers that had too give it up iirc one cyclone name escapes me.

glad to hear you don’t have any issues! I got knocked out twice in football once in practice and once in a game....those both left me not remembering anything afterwards for the rest of the day/night.

Got another concussion in college during intramural basketball and since that one I’ve had headaches of some sort about everyday.

Asking may be the norm, but it's far from a rubber-stamp approval.

The NCAA manual is pretty clear. It requires multiple conditions to be met, and this is one of them:
*The injury or illness occurs prior to the first competition of the second half of the playing season...and results in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season.

Competing in January and February means he doesn't meet that condition, which by rule would make him ineligible to receive his first year back.

But it’s not his first year he needs back, it’s this year. What am I missing?

He's still asking for a 6th year, either way.

He's not eligible to use his 1st year as a medical for multiple reasons. And about the only way to get 6 years is to miss 2 entire seasons due to injury -- which he hasn't done.

I don’t think that is true. Only need to miss 1 year to get it back.

You get 5 to participate in 4.
The only way to get 6 is to miss TWO full seasons due to injury.

You cannot voluntarily take a redshirt year (and compete, no less), and then get another medical year on top of it.
