Union trade apprenticeship

Another thing to realize about the trades are that many are hourly. The no tax on OT can mean some pretty big bucks when you break 40 hours.
The no tax on tips is only on the extra money, so if you make $10 bucks and get time and half after 40 hours, you still pay tax on the $10 dollars of the overtime, only the other $5 is tax free.

That’s still a large savings. I know a few guys who run floaters and their refunds were crazy.
But it was sold as all wages were tax free after 40 hours, quite a few were pissed when they realized only the extra money is tax free, not the entire amount.

My brother does this. Works 4-5 months a year and pulls in close to 200k. When you work 16s for a couple weeks at a time on double time, it really adds up.
Lineman make some serious cash, and the training is only a year or two. They have to climb the poles during training, but never have to do it once they get on the job, as they use cherry pickers.
Great job if you like being out in the weather. My former SIL's brother is a lineman supervisor, makes over $150K in small county seat town in Iowa.

What's cool about you guys and plumbers is you can do side work and we legally can't. I could make a fortune adding and relocating a few sprinkler heads on the weekend.

My brother said the coolest thing he did was help set poles in CA on a mountainside by helicopter. That’s too intense for me.

Yea sprinkler guys definitely have too much red tape to do anything on the side even if you wanted to.

The major power line carrying all the wind turbine juice in north Iowa runs near my farms. They built the whole thing a few years ago. The last step they had was inspecting the whole line with a helicopter, these lines are massive. I’m glad they are no more than within 1/2 mile of any place I have.

Id love to see that in Iowa. Windmill workers in Iowa make dog **** money. I truly hope they can unionize and become strong. I know a guy who makes like 40/hr and when you factor in his benefits he makes basically the same. The unions just aren't strong there yet. They lack benefits. Unless you're union you're losing the 30-40-50/hr in benefits that make it worth it to break your back. There's no way id do what I do for 55/hr on check alone.
The crane operator that lowers and raises the blades and guts in the box on a crane has to make $150 an hour? Big bucks.

I have no idea but I did the new DMU on grand a few years ago and local 234 sent an operator down just to run the freaking buckhoist. A lot of people don't realize the people that set up scaffolding are in a union in a lot of places. I know they are in Omaha. I worked on the new Leavenworth USP last year and the laborers union in KC was paying guys 40/hr to run a broom.

Have a buddy thats a lineman. Does emergencies and disasters when needed.
Can make some serious coin.

Same here basically lives in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico half the year. They think he is a hero for getting their electric back on but basically he is just there to hook up with chicks and be a drunk. Haha

One thing that would shock people is how bad iron workers get paid compared to everyone else. Even is districts where they get bonuses for working at heights above x amount of money they don't make much over 40/hr. It kind of shocking honestly.
Is crane operator still a good job? My neighbor was one back in the 90s and made really good money. I've forgotten the number now days, but when he told me it was like WOW!

Edit saw your comment later Crane operators are still well paid,

Ours for Local 347 are in June. But yea, a JW is at $45.45 on the check. I don’t directly pay into health insurance as that’s pulled from the other 20ish bucks/hour (along with funding my 401k). $66.01/hr total package for a JW.

If you are interested at all, give it a shot. Electrical apprenticeship actually just dropped to 4 years this past year. We will see how that works out going forward.

Could you please explain JW? My guess was journeyman welder?

NWICC in Sheldon has lineman school looked it up 2 semesters and a summer session to become job ready. As long as you don't mind being outside it's a pretty good job. Never been anywhere where people don't like the folks that keep the lights on for you.

As good as it gets. It can be fairly stressful depending on the kind of work you do. Tower crane guys generally make even more.

Gut out an apprenticeship for 5 years and become a service guy in a trade. You won't be rich but you'll have a total comp. package worth 140-150k /yr with a pension. That's the best I can do boss! And no you wont have to work hard at all being a service guy generally. Test backflows(plumbers or sprinklerfitters) if you want it stupid easy.
Our total comp is closer to 200k, but we have an excellent NEAP.

Yeah left wind wind 2 years ago for that reason. Hours, pay and benefits suck. Started off in my apprenticeship making about what most senior/lead site techs did, and have better health, dental, vision and retirement benefits. Basically doubled my take home pay from those alone.
