Correct! Again, this was in Orr's up-tempo system. I would guess there were many more possessions in that kind of system, so Tyrese getting there in our current system is so impressive.

People forget Fred couldn’t shoot his freshman year, he scored most of his points on back door cuts
But he impacted the game in a lot of other ways. Defense was one of them. He had the school record for steals in a game when I was there, don’t know if it was broken or not. But he had 7 in like the 3rd or 4th game he played at Iowa state
I was not aware of Hoiberg getting 7 steals in a game (I checked, it was his 4th game. You have an outstanding memory!)

Thigpen did it vs. a slightly more formidable opponent.
That is a bit oversimplification of Fred’s game. He only attempted 1.5 3’s a game as a freshman, but mostly played the 3 with Bayless and Thigpen at guard. Fred shot over 80% as a freshman on FT, and had a high % from the floor. It was his lowest 3-pt percentage year but he didn’t take that many. His volume and % went up his Junior and senior years as he played the 2 more. Thus, saying he couldn’t shoot as a freshman isn’t accurate.
But in only 1.5 shots per game. It wasn’t expected of him as he played a slashing 3 in a more traditional inside out offense, not the two he played more of later in his career, nor the 4 out we have seen more recently. Not arguing his percentage, just felt your comment “he couldn’t shoot@ as a freshman was overstated. Like Brockington, he had great hops and could rise over others to get a midrange shot off.
