Traffic Flow

That's the biggest issue with 16th is its starts with 3 lanes in 1 direction then turns into 2 at grand. Then it's a struggle to get over to the far right to turn right on Duff. I couldn't get over in time so i assumed I could just keep going to Dayton and get on to 30 there but nope they blocked access to that interchange ge so had to turn around and go back to Duff to take a left this time. Really need better way to funnel the traffic on 16th to get out to 30 as its like a parking lot going from basically 3 lane ton1 by Duff.
Taking Dayton north to 13th then 35 south to 30 isn't awful if you are wanting to go east on 30

Is there a map that shows traffic flow around the stadium and also for the grass lots on 16th? We live in Ankeny and we were unloaded and sitting down for dinner and received a text from our daughter that it took them an hour to get out of their grass lot. We all stayed the whole game. They got to their vehicle just as it started to rain. Our lot was 90 per cent empty when we left so we got out right away. Them on the other hand to take an hour to get out of a lot is ridiculous.

What is the reasoning to have fewed exit lanes when they redid the parking lots between Hilton and Jack Trice? I understand there are more parking spaces for the straight in parking but not understanding less lanes to enter and exit.

I doubt it would cost millions, we do not need something like the other bridge over 30, just something that forces people to get over university without having the traffic to stop and let them pass. If the plan was to get people to use the current bridge, and walk to the GA lots it's not working.
Yep - just a simple elevated pedestrian bridge, with spiral ramps on both sides. Thousands and thousands of these all over the country.

Inside the stadium erecting barricades for people getting concessions worked out great, no lines out in the traffic flow, had the entrances right by the RR, so people could go to the RR and then jump in line and work your way back and forth. Very efficient moving people through and they were calling out of the next.
Really freed up space for people just walking through getting from one side of the stadium to the other.

I want to go West on 30 so if I cant get over to the far right lane by Duff I'm kinda screwed other than continuing down 16th then turning around
That works too. A few extra miles but once you get past Duff you don't have much traffic.

The 30 EB on-ramp at Dayton has been shut down after games for multiple years, because it's the same lane as the exit to I-35 SB.

That'll be a mess when traffic is routed to dayton next year
I thought 4 lanes of 30 was maintained the whole project and that's why they spent $6M on the "middle" bridge? I thought east bound shifted into the center next year and then west bound the following year.

I think that's occurring but due to that shift some of the ramps are closed during that construction.

Iirc they're closing the eb duff on-ramps and the West side of the Dayton interchange.

Edit: found detour maps

Too many Iowans don’t understand the zipper merge concept and freak out like you’re cutting in line when you use both lanes like you’re supposed to
The problem is that doesn't address the problem. For example - the S 16th Right Turn onto Duff. There are 2 northbound lanes heading up to Duff, but only one is allowed to turn right. So, let's say everyone does utilize both lanes all the way up to Duff - everyone still has to merge in the last block or so and the same number of cars can still turn. Zipper merging doesn't get you to Hwy 30 faster because that is bottlenecked at Duff/16th interchange. Effectively you've made it so people can get out of the lots faster, but spend more time sitting on South 16th. And that's in the ideal scenario where everyone can perfectly handle the zipper merge. I think if that's going to happen there need to be explicit signs and people directing traffic to force it to happen.

In the real world - at Duff you have people in the left lane who need/want to turn left or go straight. Now they are bottled up behind all these people waiting to merge. You also have people getting more stressed because they are worried about whether or not someone will let them in, you have people getting road rage because the guy in front of them is too nice and let three people in, etc.

If I have to sit, I'd rather sit in the lot.

They had they whole exit shutdown at 16th, could not even w, could not access the westbound 30 ramp which is all I wanted to do. I get the reasoning for closing the eastbound ramp there. What sucks is if you park in the 2 grass lots on the north side of 16th when you exit the lot you are fighting the cars coming from the south side and vet med who turn on 16th who are in the far right lane by default so you have no choice but to get in 1 of the 2 left lanes and hope you can slip into a spot in the far right lane before you get to Duff. When its crawling not many people give you room to move over 1 lane even with the turn signal on and you don't want to be the jackhole that is blocking the left lane either and holding up everyone behind you. They probably should alternate which lots they let out at the stop light at the Vet Med entrance. Only let 1 or the other out but not both at the same time. That would allow people to get into their preferred lane immediately and not have to merge 1 way or the other. Plus no traffic direction at Duff and 16th doesn't help, if that was flowing better then 16th probably would not be such a crawl and give people more opportunity to merge into the lane they need before Duff too.

The guy I was responding to was talking about turning on University from Mortensen.

The Duff/16th intersection has got to be a mess after games, I agree.

It was stupid they didn't kick all the "staging" out yesterday. They said they were going to and didn't so now they will actually have a real mess next weekend when people do the same thing in SIGNIFICANTLY higher quantities and then they try to tell everyone you can't stage.

Now where it is ridiculously ******* stupid is to force all the staff to be there at 7am for the staff meeting and sitting outside for an hour at their lots staring at traffic you aren't letting into said lots.

Set up 4th for "early" parking and turn away people who don't or won't buy the early parking pass. I would spend another few hundred bucks no question to get early parking access.
Doing away with 6 AM donor lot opening (regardless of start time) has made this worse.

Holy ****. 16th is certainly not set up to handle that traffic volume and the light at Duff and SE 16th will be an unmitigated ******** at all times.

"But we realized less than 10% of our season ticket holders were showing up that early!"
Because only those of us who wanted specific spots were doing that. Duh. Didn’t realize we were in such an elite group - 10% - until it was used against us.

Also not all games are created equal.

Sure, I can't imagine there are a ton of people who were showing up at 5am for an 11am game in November. More people are just going to the game, plus people are kind of set in their spots.

But plenty of people were showing up at 5am for an 11am kick in September against Iowa. Weather is usually better so people want to tailgate, plus there's more of a rush to grab tailgating locations- especially with all the non-regular attendees. I don't set up a tailgate like I did back in the day and visit friends', but back when I did we were typically targeting even earlier than 5am for Iowa week as there'd be a line forming well before 5.

And if they still allowed that that'd help somewhat to spread the traffic around, which is certain to be a complete clusterfuck next saturday morning
