The market is crazy right now, the amount of dudes camping out at Walmart and Target to flip sealed packs is crazy. I've gotten lucky and hit some restocks right as the vendors were there but mostly, I've just been buying up singles on ebay and ripping packs when I get lucky enough to find them. The internet has changed the game though, the breaking/rip and ship stuff is huge money...for some reason.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I find stock about once a month at Target. Although I just found Contenders baseball this weekend so my day was made. I’ll be honest, the internet has been great since there are so many different types of product out there. I like to see what I‘m buying.
I collect. I have moved to collecting mainly vintage baseball cards. I find it easier to buy vintage with the demands of young kids. I’m not worried about the large price fluctuations that modern cards can experience.
I used to setup and sell at about 20 card shows a year. I’d travel to Chicago and San Diego area for the really big shows. At one point I was considering leaving my job to sell cards full time. I collected mainly bowman chrome baseball then. I was constantly checking box scores for not just MLB but all the minor leagues too. I was working 50 hours a week at my job. Then I’d work all my off time on my hobby. My hobby used to make me more money than my job.
I quit selling when I got married and my son was born.
My son is 8 now. I hope he soon takes an interest in trading cards so we can start setting up at shows and he can learn to make some money.

I honestly had no idea trading cards were hot again.
Mostly have late 70's through late 80's football cards. Sold all my baseball cards in college for beer money. I have some decent rookie cards. Went through a phase where I bought some in the late 90's too. Nothing since.
Have about 3-4 shoe boxes full of 70's stuff. All three sports.....nothing in plastic but still in very good shape. I swear I can still smell the bubblegum. The weirdest are the 3D football cards.
My most valuable card is a rookie Pete Maravich. $250 last I checked.
I'm a vintage collector as well. Will only touch pre-1987 cards. The hobby went to hell beginning in 1987 IMO.

I used to be big into collecting cards when I was younger. Just started getting back into it during the pandemic. Hard to find much retail these days. Did find a bunch of the new Rookies & Stars football in Target last week. Card collecting can be really addicting. Tough to stop buying once you start.
That’s awesome. I’ve never been to a card show. Did most of my collecting through either my dad, who was a broker for Donruss or Target retail. It looks like Bowman Chrome is still a pretty high end product with a lot of rookies who sale pretty easily.

I‘ll be honest, I’m not huge into vintage. Mainly due to lack of knowledge. I’m primarily a team set builder and look for Milwaukee Brewers. Although, owning a Hank Aaron would be cool.
I also try to collect Olympic cards and extreme sports. The baseball market was flooded in the early 90s, which killed the market, but brought rise to a bunch of other sports cards!

pokemon cards are back BIG. twitch streamers are buying booster packs for $$$ and opening them on stream.

I think people being stuck at home/jobless during Covid has contributed but its always the rookie classes that people are after. Ja and Zion sent NBA cards skyrocketing, some of the sealed retail stuff from last year goes for 500-600% of retail costs on the secondary market, people don't bat an eye at paying $50 for a pack that cost $10 at Walmart. This years NFL class is loaded so they are very sought after as well. Finding anything retail is either luck or a couple weeks worth of trying every day to figure out vendor schedules. Some Targets and Walmarts are starting to limit purchases to 2/customer, some have had to bring on security because of altercations between shoppers. It's crazy right now.
I've collected on and off for about 20 years. Don't have a ton of stuff, though. Mostly, I collect just what I like (Giants and A's, along with favorite players from other teams), going for quantity over 'quality' (cards of any particular value). If I happen to find some stuff worth more than a dime, then that's great. I try to hit sports card shows when they come to North Grand Mall. I'll find the vendor who has the most boxes of cheap commons and sit until I've gone through them all. One time, I walked away with 425 cards (and somehow only duplicated about a dozen of cards I already had). I've found stuff on eBay before, but not frequently. It's a fun side-hobby, though. I enjoy sorting them when I buy a bunch at a show and then organizing them into what I already have. Most stuff goes into binders.
