He may just be done with it all.
A lotta rumors he was done after the tourney because he wasn't rushing to sign a new contract.

It's a grind now and player $ is a big part of it and he comes from a "coaching" family.

Coaches closer to home than you think are considering hanging it up early due to the unsavoriness of the current era.

Gard hasn't made the second round since 16-17.
If Sconnie moves on Bennett is easily offered the job in 3 seconds. He'll always have that as an option if he just needs a reset.

That would at least interject some interest back into the program.

WI had a specific style for a long time and it wasn't known for its excitement but at least it was an identity. Gard really hasn't had one.

NYT/Athletic has an article out. He just seems wiped out from it all. Said he thinks there needs to be collective bargaining for players, etc.
Said he recently took a vacation with his wife and just enjoyed spending time with her.
Mentions his parents are still alive and in their 80s and wants to be with them more.

Sounds like a guy at peace.

According to the Athletic, he was just burnt out and did not like the way the sport was moving with NIL and unlimited transfer rules. He just signed a contract extension earlier this season. Guy has done a lot of soul searching since last season, asked his former players if they would have transferred if they could of, and most stated they were glad they stayed because of the position he put them in, but some said they would have left it they had the current rules.

Guy has made a lot of money, and I would say that burning desire to continue doing it had been lost, so he stepped away. Great for his asst. that gets the job, but really puts the school into a bind if the new guy doesn't win.

Yeah I didn't get any nefarious vibes from it at all.

Makes a person wonder if we will not be seeing more coaches walking away at a younger age. These guys are under so much pressure to win these days, and the money they make can set them up for life. We might be in the last generation of coaching into their 70's.
