This isn't CSPs fault, it's CFHs fault

How would he have gotten a NBA job without coaching ISU?

He was a very well respected former NBA player working in an NBA front office. He would have no problem getting an assistant job and working up that way. I mean Hornacek somehow pulled that route off, no idea why you would think coaching here would be a requirement for getting an NBA job.

Who do think he should have hired? He was handcuffed by how long it too Fred to leave. Everyone gave the hire glowing reviews.
Anyone that meets better criteria than JP used. I don't care about big names or any of that ****.

What was JP looking for in a plan? What is Prohm's path to success at ISU? Skillful tactician? A guy that will take a very good offensive minded team and use his ability to coach defense in route to a great Year 1? A great recruiter with the right connections needed to "hire" our way to recruits on such short notice? Or were we looking for a guy that fits the culture and will not get in the way of what Fred stopped building two years ago? Imo we should have been looking for someone that could correct Hoiberg's wrongs- recruiting ASAP by "hiring" connections to specific recruits and a guy with more Floyd in him than Hoiberg had.

Have we seen anything that "is" Prohm? Imo if you liked the hire, you are waiting until next year or even Year 3 to judge. If you never liked the hire and you were hoping to see a coach something, anything, from CSP, you still don't like the hire. Clearly I am the latter.

The major damage was leaving a team that had a legit chance at a special season. It is very difficult for a team when their leader who acts like a father figure leaves. Fred leaving upset me and all I am is a fan not someone who played their guts out for him and was with him everyday for 3 years. If you don't think it would upset you I don't know what to say. This team is exhausted and big 12 season just started.

I love Fred Hoiberg, but of course he has a huge influence on this team, those are his players. Obvi so does Prohm. I think the team needs a lot more work than Steve thought or hoped. He is going to need to be creative, but this is why guys coach. He should embrace the challenge.

Plan? What plan? His best hire was Fred Hoiberg and that was sort of a shot in the dark at the time. Personally I'm sick of much of the current leadership at ISU (not just in the AD).
Good, go find another team then. That or give millions to the athletic dept to go double our salaries.

Fred's defense may not have been great but it worked. It translated into the best transition offense in the country. Our offense doesn't flow like it used to and the defense is just plain horrible. It's gotta be tough for a new coach to come in and take over a top 10 team, but he has plenty of talented players to work with. Letting the players basically coah the team early on was a huge mistake.

Even if Prohm is over his head, I think he will get it figured out. I don't see a return to the McDermott years ahead, even if this team doesn't meet what we originally expected.

A lot of the energy we had on defense was sparked by our transition play. Now that we aren't really getting anything in transition the defensive energy meter just never gets rejuvenated.

Or you can take the quick route, by taking a job at a place where people love you and you can do no wrong. Scrap together a team to win right now, win to get the NBA to look at you and leave before things fall apart.

He was also the most successful coach in isu history (in terms of winning % and several other marks) but lets just ignore that. The ending was a bit ugly and he left sooner than most thought, but most people knew he had NBA aspirations. Just trying to reach his goals like everyone else. He left a pretty good roster behind for this season, especially with a healthy Naz.
He left later than he should have imo.

In hindsight, it would have been best for both had he gotten the Golden State job. He would have a NBA title and looking at a mini dynasty and ISU would likely be in a better spot. I do thank Fred for giving us this "problem" of how to maintain success.

So Fred shouldn't have taken the job with the Bulls? What world do you live in? Yeah, lets blame this season on the best coach we have ever had. Damn you Fred! You should have turned down all that money. You should have put your dream aside. You really upset the crybabies on Cyclone Fanatic!

Worked for Clyde Drexler! The people that hire NBA coaches were already plenty aware of Fred.

You must not follow recruiting. Since Monte's class, Fred signed....... Custer (mid major at best) from the HS ranks. THAT'S IT. No one cares that we were 2nd or 3rd for Vaugh and Diallo.

They took Noskowiak and Babb after when Fred was on his way out, and they knew they had huge holes in the roster.

Fred stopped recruiting, or at least stopped landing B12 players.
It had to be hard to get guys to buy in when he barely even side-stepped those questions in return.

Fred gave us a decent problem to have, but he still gave us a problem. How to sustain success with and after a defacto lame duck coach?

I'm not sure why we can't give Fred credit while also acknowledging that he completely screwed over Iowa State.

Scrap together a team to win right now.....or take us to four consecutive NCAA tournaments....the longest streak in our history. Don't put this on Fred. JP decided to hold season ticket holders hostage and then couldn't wait to find the next mid-major discount coach. Season ticket holder donations increase by 100% and the AD cuts his coaches salary by 50%. This is completely on Prohm. Either he can't identify the problem or he doesn't have the balls to fix it. Either way it is on him.

Maybe I will, just hope a bunch of others don't as well. What reason is there to be even marginally excited about ISU athletics right now? I can tell by the inferred tone of your response I struck a nerve. What great successes has JP had? About the only thing he has done is raise some donations and use TV money to make facilities improvements (pretty much all the power 5 programs are doing that).

The fans were led to believe that coaching at Iowa State was his dream job.

He used Iowa State to get the Bulls job. And that's fine, but don't act like him being here was only good for Iowa State. It was good for Fred Hoiberg. He got labeled an elite coach.

GTFO with the revisionist history. Custer was top 100 and people on this board raved about him for years. The problem is that CFH blatantly recruited over four year kids in favor of the win now mercenary approach. Kids like Gibson (if managed properly), SDW (top 150), and Custer could have all contributed meaningful depth to this team but they felt screwed over. So while the approach gave us a nice run it was not sustainable and it's hard to get excited what the roster looks like after this year with a bunch of meh 3* kids.

Exactly! I can't believe people on here blaming Hoiberg. Didn't he have heart surgery shortly after last season ended? And then he took the Bulls job shortly after? I'm sure he assumed he was leaving the program in great shape (which he did... anyone who says otherwise is a fool) before he decided to leave.
