This is depressing... :(

The separation, revenue-wise, between the BIG/SEC and all others continues to widen. ISU was actually pretty close to its predicted totals. UNI continues down the road to increased subsistence from the general university budget...if it wants to truly compete. The good news is that good coaching still matters.

Not-to-mention the lawsuits - the ones we know about, at least.

Discrimination and constitutional rights lawsuits
  • Racial discrimination: A 2023 settlement was reached in a lawsuit alleging racial discrimination within the football program. The settlement included financial compensation, tuition assistance, mental health counseling, and funding for diversity initiatives.
  • Constitutional rights: A lawsuit was filed in 2024 by athletes from multiple Iowa schools, including the University of Iowa, alleging that state investigators violated their constitutional rights by tracking their cellphones without a warrant during a sports gambling probe. The federal lawsuit was dismissed in November 2025.
  • Gender discrimination: The university reached a $400,000 settlement in 2021 to resolve a Title IX lawsuit brought by female swimmers after the university cut the women's swimming program.

Other legal issues
  • Other discrimination case: In 2017, the University of Iowa paid a $6.5 million settlement to resolve two discrimination lawsuits, one of which was brought by a former senior associate athletic director.

They make bad investments in paying millions to QBs who can’t pass consistently. Maybe they’ll finally stop that and try to develop someone.
 
There are a lot of Iowa fans that have a really hard time handling that we are on the same level as them or have surpassed them, particularly in football. Since Campbell has been here their first coping mechanism was that Matt was going to leave at the first opportunity. Next it was that they were going to have so much more NIL money than us, sold more collective beer than us, etc. When neither of those happened, its now shifted to they have more athletic department revenue than us and we are going to have a shortfall and won't be able to compete anymore.

The eastern Iowa media has a long tradition of just giving Iowa fans what they believe and want to hear so this article by the Gazette and how it is written is really unsurprising.

The depressing part is that ISU will continue to struggle with coming up with $20.5 million each year for athletes while EIU will have plenty to spare with the money they are getting through the media deals and its increasing.
You really have to wonder if ISU and other B12 schools can get this up without a very large increase in the amount of money coming into the program from an outside source. The BOR will never allow the university to start giving the athletic department money, because they back EIU and would just as soon see ISU destroyed them on the same money level as EIU. They have no problem UNI getting that money, but not ISU.

The other thing, if you talk to Iowa fans or even just read headlines in Iowa media you would think they double our revenue number or something. Sure it would be nice to have $39m more in revenue, but the difference between $153m and $114m isn't insurmountable, particularly when they have 4 additional teams to fund and provide scholarships for and some of the other department mismanagement they are currently paying for.

Our revenue and budget is a lot closer to theirs than Iowa is to a school like Ohio St. ('24 revenue was $102m more than Iowa).

Iowa laid off most their part time athletic staffers and cut their budget for student staff as well last year. Their football equipment staff got cut by half because of rev sharing. They don’t have the 20.5 budgeted out either.
