BCS football: The latest on realignment | College Hotline

Make no mistake, folks: The SEC’s desire to sign a new TV deal — and its frustration that the little old Pac-12 has a better deal — is driving the realignment.
There wouldn’t be anyplace for A&M and Mizzou to go without the SEC opening its doors.

Now … with two new schools that bring 11 million TV homes … and the sizzling market for televised sports … and the intense demand for football within its massive footprint … the SEC stands to sign media deals that will likely zoom past the Pac-12′s average of $20.8 million per school per year.
We’re talking $25-30 million school/yr for the SEC.
And don’t be surprised if SEC commish Mike Slive attempts to form his own TV network — just as the Big Ten and Pac-12 have.
-------

Sources have told the Hotline that there is growing sentiment within the Big 12 conference to expand to 12 — that with the Pac and Big Ten at 12 and the SEC about to be 14, the Big 12 won’t be considered a big boy league unless it’s 12.

-------

And what about the Cougars? Despite all the smoke and noise and speculation and rumors, I have yet to receive any substantive information about BYU’s preference.
The Cougars are one of the toughest schools in the country to read because of their political structure: The powerbrokers are the church leaders in SLC.
That said, if the Big 12 dangles an attractive offer, I expect the Cougars to listen intently.
As one source well versed in all things BYU noted: The Cougars went Independent because Utah jumped to the Pac-12, and joining Texas and Oklahoma in the Big 12 would be an even better countermove for BYU.
(To think BYU’s primary motivation for going Indy was anything other than countering Utah’s move is, in my opinion, to deny reality.)

I saw at the end of Blair Kirkoff's KC Star chat today that he mentioned the NCAA is going to meet in December to talk about (and maybe decide, give specific restrictions) on university dedicated networks showing high school highlights.

It'd be a shame if Mizzou decided that even though the Big 12 is voting to go to equal revenue sharing and sign a 13 year grant of rights that they'd leave over the issue of high school highlights on the LHN. Then in December the NCAA rules against it making the issue a non-issue in the end. They'd choose to leave behind all their rivalries for the past 100 years, a better chance at winning, Texas recruiting pipeline, and geographic relevancy for a money grab and a chance to get back at Texas. In the end, everyone would lose (except teams like Alabama and Florida who pad their already fat wallet).

Any guesses as to when Mizzou is going to decide? Really, how long should it take? You think they haven't been talking about their choice the last couple weeks?

Calling Baylor...time for you to sue for damages if Mizzou leaves and TV contracts get voided or reduced.

I don't think it was the HS highlights that forced the move. I think it was the LHN standing in the way of developing a viable Tier 3 rights network for the whole league. Beware reports for Orangebloods...they're just cow Chips straight from Bevo's mouth.

It's an interesting question, though. I think the fans have already cut emotional ties to the Big 12 (and contrary to reports, NOBODY believes we're going to the B1G).

We'll probably keep the KU rivalry in some form (certainly in football...they need the $$$). I don't know that anybody's really concerned about the other teams.

The pipeline ain't closed...like I've said, we'll be fine.

Better chance at winning...you got me there. Definitely a step up in competition.

Geographic relevancy? Hasn't seem to hurt LSU. Or South Carolina. In fact, depending on whomever the Big 12 invites, we may have ended up FURTHER away from our conference partners (like BYU or WVU).

There's no getting back at Texas. Even if MU's move was able to dissolve the conference, Bevo would land on her feet. We just don't want to be around when she decides that she can make an extra $20M by moving somewhere else.

What move?

Yeah...there hasn't been a move...contrary to what you are saying, and what the Columbia Tribune or Gabe DeArmond says. If you are anything like the rest of the fanbase...wow. Someone else in a similar thread had it right, you are like the Boomer of Mizzou.

I want Mizzou to stay. It would be incredibly hypocritical if they decide to leave. I am one that feels the rivalries and the game matter more (what fan doesn't?) Losing Mizzou would be a big blow to the conference IMO...even though it may survive. We can't have longstanding members uproot and leave.

I still feel the chance that Mizzou stays is high. If they were going to the SEC, realistically I think it would have faster and/or clearer than this. This seems like the Oklahoma situation all over again.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Mark Bradley gives 3 reasons the SEC needs Missouri:

  1. New TV markets, expands the footprint.
  2. Helps the academic image by adding another AAU school.
  3. They play "pretty good football and good basketball" and that "They’ll [Missouri and Texas A&M] broaden the base without rendering the league top-heavy".
In other words they get more money, an image upgrade, and someone they can beat.

Not sounding too likely on the KU deal. Certainly, basketball sounds out of the deal. I wouldn't be surprised to see KU slam the door on Mizzou.

IF, and that's a real big "if," Mizzou goes to the SEC, come back in five years and we'll talk about the pipeline.

Here is the biggest problem for Mizzou that I see: You are the NORTHERN frontier to the SEC. Besides Kentucky, it's not even CLOSE. LSU made up for being a Western post because they had tradition and could recruit kids that way. South Carolina, plays in a warm weather state and has only really been relevant since 2000 on. Even then, they're no world beater year in, year out.

The point is, it's going to be A LOT harder for Mizzou to convince SEC region athletes to put on snow boots and head to Columbia, Missouri that's just outside of East Jesus, Nowhere. In five years, come back and we can discuss this, but mark my words: A move to the SEC would be disastrous for the entire Mizzou AD.

First, why do you feel the need to be a Mizzou apologetic on this board?

Second, I think you are making a bad assumption that you'll get to keep your rivalries.

Third, you really think Texas recruiting will be the same for you? Its a lot easier to sell Texas recruits on coming north to a top 25 team than it is to sell recruits to come north to a 6-6 team every year. You'll be the Kentucky of the SEC west. Hello, Music City bowl every other year.

Fourth, geographic relevancy is about the fans first and foremost. The fans are far cut off from every other team (except Arkansas) compared to the Big 12. Feel like leaving the men's tourney in Kansas City to go to Atlanta for the Men's tourney? And you're comparing yourself to LSU??? Really?

Fifth, do you really think you'll be left without a home in the end if Texas leaves? With all your TV sets you'll be fine no matter what.

Let's wrap this thing up! Mizzou be on your way, it's best you move along now. The Big XII is going to build stability and that's only possible without your whoring ways. By leaking interest in the B1G you proved that YOU are the biggest ***** of the conference.

ESPN is potentially willing to renegotiate their contract with the conference to match the duration of the Fox contract...and that is what will dictate the conference go back to 12 teams. Boren knows the deal, he's telling Mizzou were ok without you....let's get this show on the road!!!

Report: Missouri Tigers hope to join SEC, had wanted Big Ten invite most - ESPN
