The final episode of The Office will air Thursday night. This show was so good for the first 5 seasons. I feel it should of ended when Michael Scott left at the end of season 7, although the last half of this season has been pretty good.

The last couple of years have not been great for The Office's reputation, but 10 years from now it will deservedly be recognized as the best sitcom of its era. Any show would start showing some wear after that long on the air. That being said, I wish they had thought through a post-Steve Carrell direction that wasn't just "slap our next biggest 'movie star' in the boss slot and hope for the best".

Completely this. People say it shouldve ended when Carrell left, and i actually disagree. They'd run out of material for him (i was ready for him to go) and they had a lot of potential for the rest of the ensemble cast once he was out of there (really seeing that the last few episodes with this arc of dwight taking over).

They completely wasted James Spader. And anything to do with sabre, bates, gabe, etc, was annoying.

oh god, I absolutely hate Gabe. Spader was great. I actually am not a huge Ed Helms fan, but I still enjoy the show. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Arrested Development vehemently disagrees.

Fantastic show, had some rough spots after Michael left, but also had some good episodes. Definitely think its time for it to end but will live on forever through reruns.

There's "Seinfeld" and then there's everything else.

Love the OP's homage to 'Prison Mike' though. One of the great moments of the show.

I LOVE Arrested Development, but it doesn't even come close. It is very funny, but it was not funnier than The Office, not as long lived as The Office, and The Office had a much, much better storyline.

I think the problem with it was about one thing: characters. The beginning of it was awesome. Michael is an elite character, Jim is a great character, Pam works well with him and that storyline is elite. Dwight is a great character.

Then they introduce the 2nd wave of people once they realize the show is getting picked up for more shows. Darrel, Andy, Karen, and bigger focus on Angela, Merideth, Kevin, Creed, and Oscar were all slam dunks.

After that, there is flop after flop after flop of introducing new people. Gabe, Jo Bennet, Charles, I never liked Erin (although some do somehow?), Nellie, Robert California, and Will Ferrell (who I love, but it wasn't all that great of a cameo). Anything with Sabre was terrible. Then they made Andy boss which ruined him.

Worst of all they forgot how to write Pam and turned her into a selfish b**** and took away any charm or back and forth she had with Jim, which completely killed a huge chunk of the whole show dynamic.

Anyway, that's my two cents. I still think as an overall show it is amazing, but they messed up a ton of stuff and drove it down to an average show for two seasons or so. That is what happens when the network doesn't give you a timeline for an ending and strings the show along so it can be a cash cow.

The Office had at LEAST 5 season of greater average quality than AD. It didn't go downhill till season 6 at the earliest.

The first few seasons of The Office were pretty good (even through they were mirror images of a series that was already made), but better than AD??? That's crazy talk.

Actually, the first few seasons weren't even close to mirrors of the original.

I think the office stayed really good until about season 5. The last few seasons have been hit or miss (there have actually been some good ones in there) and I've found the episodes sitting longer and longer on the DVR each week.

However, probably the last 10 or so episodes this year have been really good. Nice to see the show go out on top.

I'm gonna stop you right there. The first season had some mirror image episodes, and it wasn't like they copied the British version. Ricky Gervais was the producer for it. Then in the 2nd season I believe almost all the material was new. There is absolutely no way you can believe that the 3 seasons of AD are as good as the first 5 seasons of The Office. AD is just string of funny happenstances and misunderstandings with no storyline and no basis in reality that got cancelled because nobody watched it. It is hilarious, but it's not on the same level in any way.

The whole series copied the characters and the first couple seasons mimicked the ****** of the BBC version almost entirely.

But that doesn't matter; Arrested Development is clearly superior. The writing is better. The cast is better. The acting is better. The production is better. Arrested Development is the gold standard for a comedy series.

You keep pointing to the fact that it was cancelled as if that's some indicator of how unpopular and bad it was...but it fails to explain why it's rated 9.2 on IMDB compared to The Office's 8.7.

On this issue, there can be no debate (yeah, that's a Seinfeld reference, andybernard...deal with it).

The whole plot with andy was just confusing. They made the audience pull for him to get Erin, and then turned him into this idiot jerk who just disappears for months (to accomodate Ed Helms' movie schedule). He wasnt bad until they just destroyed his character this season.

Robert California couldve been so good. I loved Spader in Boston Legal, but the character they wrote for him was a complete waste of his talents.

Yeah, though thankfully they had a good resolution to that. I still think she shouldve told him to take that few month road gig for the new company... after all they did invest a ton of money into it.

I cant blame NBC for that. Its one of only a couple shows giving NBC halfway decent ratings. Theyve cancelled better stuff in the last 5 years that is better than the crap they have on most of their lineup now(though theyve now cancelled most of that too).

Arrested Development was just ahead of its time. It was way more funny than The Office.

You have obviously never watched The Office. I just finished watching through AD waiting for the new season. It just isn't close. I tell everyone who will listen how funny AD is, but you are just plain wrong. AD couldn't go as long as The Office did at the level it did.

You seem to not understand how hard it is to keep a sitcom going for that long, and AD couldn't even manage a 4th season on television. As great as it was, it got old and people got tired of it because nothing was new and there was no storyline. It was just a kid awkwardly coming on to his cousin and a bunch of unemployed idiots. Which makes for a great season or two of comedy, but doesn't get you anywhere big picture.
