Beard had those records at Texas Tech, after he played for a National Championship. The guy is a hell of a coach, and now he is at the UT, it will be easier for him to get the best talent in the state to come play in Austin as compared to Lubbock.

Problem with bringing in 4 and 5 star players is they tend to think only about scoring and offense, and most have never been asked or required to play defense to get minutes, so I am sure a few of them are struggling with the idea that unless you play defense, you are not playing, so they leave.

Some systems work better with a "lesser" ranked recruit" that is used to working for what they have vs. relying on their physical gifts. Bil Self's system has run better with "lower" ranked guys (35-100) who spent multiple years in the system learning the details rather than Top 25 guys who were just elite physical specimens. The ability to jump higher and run faster doesn't mean you have the ability to remember who to cover in a defensive play with multiple assignments based on what the opponent does. Beard's system is pretty complex; it's tough to pick up in 2+ months so coaches like that tend to go with more experienced guys who know their assignment.
