Surround Sound Setup

Some cable manufacturers make a very thin/flat cable specifically for being run under carpet...Monster is one option. You can go to home depot or menards, etc and buy a cable fishing tool to help pull it under the carpet. They're only about $10, I think. You can use this combo without having to pull back the carpet, just make sure you go under the pad too & don't let the cable twist.

I wouldn't buy anything monster, it's way overpriced, just my opinion. Myself and several others I know have had very good luck with monoprice.com. Lot's of options and every cable I've ever ordered from speaker wire to 50' HDMI cable all have been cheap and high quality.

I recently hid my sound system in my hall closet and ran the back speakers down into the basement, under the floor joists, and back up again, just like several others have suggested.

Good Luck!

I actually agree with you on Monster products and use monoprice myself, but I don't think they have a flat wire option, but didn't check.

Some people, like me, have their family room on a slab, with no basement, so going down to joists below may not be an option.

I consider myself to be somewhat of an audiophile & have a fairly decent investment in my home theater system. Typically, I just say: "to each his own," but my guess is that you may never have had the chance to listen to a truley good quality system that is set up the right way. The set up is really important.....from proper speaker angles, to proper speaker/subwoofer crossover levels, etc. (and on and on)
Believe it or not, my brother actually has a degree in audio engineering (yes you can actually get a degree for that). We're talking a total audiophile, won't even listen to music on an iPod because it's a compressed format and he wants to keep his ears tuned to pristine sound. He has a "good quality system that is set up the right way," to use your words. It just does not do that much for me. As long as I have clear, full-range sound, I'm fine with it. I don't need to hear bullets whizzing past my head. Now, if a room was suitable for it and the setup would be relatively easy I would go ahead and install a 5.1 or 7.1 system. But it is definitely not a priority for me and I'm perfectly happy without it.

Would something like this work for your application?

I ran something like this for my surround speakers (down from the drop ceiling). It's really doesn't catch your eye on a white wall.

No biggy. You just don't seem to have an ear for it . Good for you. Save you a lot of money! ;)

This is my issue (slab) and I have thus far done nothing. I have the fronts, center and sub - well technically I think my surrounds are on but they are sittnig behind the TV! I have contemplated fishing something under the carpet but don't even have the ambition to tear it away from the wall so I was going to move the TV and make a small hole and fish from there. Aside from the want to, I'm afraid of snagging it or something else that will foul up the carpet. I have also contemplated wireless but it strikes me that for as little sound as actually comes from surrounds, wireless may not perform well enough to be worth it. I have nothnig to back that up of course. I also am not willing to spend well in excess of 100 bucks which is what the last pair I noticed cost.

In the last house, however, with an unfinished basement I drilled right on through the carpet through the floor, appearence be damned :)

Totally OT, but has anybody set up their directTV with 5.1? I can't figure it out, so I'm still just running two channel.
