Student Section

I don't know if it's generational or what, but Cyclone Alley is a shadow of itself. We're 21-2 and have been in the top 10 for most of the year. I know it's not Kansas, but it shouldn't matter. It's a conference game on a Saturday. I see student sections in Lawrence and Provo that show up every game and are engaged and loud. Moving the seats back has had a negative effect, but it has to be more than that. Sometimes I feel like our fans don't get excited unless we're the underdog.
This is true and it’s 100% due to moving the seats. It was great back when I was a student and this change killed it.

Is it the competition? It seems like we've been sleepwalking through the conference home games ao far and haven't really been challenged.

I thought the crowd today was pretty bad, at least on TV. I think it will ramp up once we start playing some better teams and there's plenty the next month.

We stay till the end and with a full house don't hurry out, it did seem like the parking lots were slow emptying today. We head north afterwards swung by Pickles Pub in Kamrar for supper it was full when we arrived (445ish) and full when we left. Which was great nice to see a local business doing great, even though they were swamped our waitress was upbeat and doing good for as busy as they were.
Pickles is a good place to eat with very good pizza.

To me its just hard to tell sometimes because networks do the dumb decision of muting down the crowd noise on broadcasts. Drives me nuts.
Funny, I am opposite. Drives me nuts when they have the really loud crowd noise that spikes. To each his own.

I wish we could come up with something like:

Students need to verify 1 or 2 hrs before game if theyre going to make it.
If they dont a text gets sent out to Boys and Girls Club/Ames High/Gilbert kids to claim a seat for free. Cyride could have a dedicated bus shuttle them from Ames High to the game.

These seats would be higher in the second deck.

How about going back to the ticket packet with assigned seats in different sections like we did when I was in school. Didn't have empty seats with that.

The ones not there today will be ******** about being turned away next week.
Yep, and most of them will be trying to show up for their first game of the year even though they did nothing with their tickets to all the prior home games.

100% we need to downsize the student section. Get rid of the two end student sections of the balcony and maybe even more than that. Will also boost revenue for athletic department and will help with noise.

I've been to three games this year, and the crowd was mild all three times (Northwestern, Oklahoma State and Baylor). I think the fan base is just spoiled because the team is so good.

The epitome of noise was the Hoiburg, Thomas, Niang, Morris...era. Could toss in Orr's tenure.
My ears literally hurt.
Not an issue now
I’m not old enough to remember the Orr era, but that was a lot louder than the Hoiberg coaching tenure. I’ve heard KU fans complain that the atmosphere in Phog has diminished. The invention of smart phones was probably the worst thing to happen to society and it also has had a negative effect with crowd involvement too.

No canned music.
No light shows.
No "drawing your attention to the video board" or to center court.
Much shorter media timeouts.

There was empty seats in regular sections too but no one is ******** about that
The athletics department holds a lot of tickets back for overflow and other things.

During the iowa game, after the student section was filled, they found reserved seats for what I would guess is a few hundred seats.

Also,a few empty seats is expected, but there were literally hundreds of seats open.

I wish they would do like KU and have a GA section for the general public for all games, minus KU and Iowa.

I would put money on empty too rows for Houston as well.
