MLB: STL Cardinals

Yes, and this is commendable, to be sure.

Cards still won all three games, though.

and they looked good doing it.... I was impressed by Lohse, I had never really been too high on him but he mixed things up really well. I am hoping that this series was a 'coming out party' type series for Joel as a releiver though. Coming in with 0 out and runner on third then getting two week grounders from Ankiel and Pujols and a strikeout to Glaus had to be a pretty big confidence boost.

Oh yeah, did you guys see Ankiel's 9th inning catch yesterday? Maybe not quite Edmonds-esque, but a beauty nonetheless. Our OF could really be dangerous for the next few years, especially once Rasmus gets the call-up.
Which outfielders will we send down when Dunc gets healthy? My vote is for Shumaker. I have the feeling if our outfield continues to produce, Rasmus will only get called up if Ryan Ludwick really struggles, because I really think all our other outfielders are in the bigs to stay.

Probably will be Skip. 0 for 14 so far this year. Although, since he is a veteran--and Tony likes his veterans--it might be Barton.

I hope not. He can hit, and he can absolutely fly on the basepath. He is one of the faster players the Cards have had since 2000.

It won't be Barton. IIRC, Rule V draft choices have to stay on the active roster all season. I also think it'll be Skip, but it sucks because once again, he produces in spring training and drops the ball when it actually matters.

Who will be batting lead-off if/when Schu goes back to AAA? Think it'll be Kennedy or Miles?

Probably Miles or Izturis. I don't think Kennedy has the wheels for leadoff, but I also think Tony used him in that spot a few times last year.

I actually like how Brian Barton is doing. He's faster than Izturis or Miles, and has more power.

Agreed, but I'm not sure TLR is going to play Barton as an everyday OF (read that as a consistent starter). He's got wheels though, and I really like how he approaches the game.

Cards fan checking in - I'm surprised only because I thought things would be rough early in the year with 3 pitchers out.

I read an article today that said that Tony planned to increase Barton's playing time as the year goes on. He wants him to take baby steps, giving time to Skip here and there in preference, and wants Barton to play a full 9 innings by midsummer.

and my bro held that 3-4-5 to 0-4 with two K's over the weekend... I'm just sayin...

Your brother's last name Hanrahan? We saw him pitching and were like what the heck he's from Des Moines...well actually Norwalk but I was thinking it could've been your brother.

BARTON UNBLEMISHED

Rookie outfielder Brian Barton has started three games in the major leagues. All three came over the weekend when the Cardinals swept the Washington Nationals, and Barton had much to do with that, with four hits and a walk.

La Russa gave Barton his first start to rest struggling Skip Schumaker, who is nothing for 14. The other two he earned, although La Russa, not wanting to bury Schumaker either and wanting to upgrade his defense late in the game, inserted Schumaker roughly halfway through the game on all three occasions.

"Baby steps defensively," said La Russa of his use of Barton. "Next time he gets out there, maybe he (goes) seven and by the middle of the season, he’s playing nine innings. I think he’s done very well."

Barton said, "I’m a competitor and obviously, you would like to stay in. But at the same time, if we’re winning, everything is fine. I just want to win.

"I feel like Tony knows what he’s doing out there. If it’s time for me to come out, I come out."

La Russa said Schumaker would play considerably on the seven-game trip to Houston and San Francisco that starts tonight at Minute Maid Park in Houston. "I’m not worried about him losing his timing because he’s been in there for half the game," La Russa said.

There is a fourth consecutive lefthander, Wandy Rodriguez, pitching tonight, tempting La Russa to keep Barton in the lineup or more likely to restore lefthanded-hitting Chris Duncan as a starter.

Duncan, who has had a hamstring issue, hit only one of his 21 homers against a lefthanded pitcher last year, but it was an upper-deck, 420-foot bomb off Rodriguez a year and one day ago in Houston.

"My guess is (Duncan) will be ready to go (Monday)," La Russa said. "But that’s not official."

Yadier is such a weapon defensively, that was a great throw to get Milledge yesterday. He has also really picked up his hitting.

Really, we've been about as good as I thought we could be, with the exception of Glaus. How many times has he struck out or grounded out with RISP and 2 outs? He's had about a million RBI opportunities and he's squandered damn near all of them. Once he comes around and provides that protection in the 4th or 5th spot, I think we'll be even more dangerous.

Glaus is making me eat my words, and I'm lovin every bite. Keep it up buddy, keep it up!

Do any of the Cards fans on here know how I can get Cardinals radio online? I really want to listen to Mike Shannon's broadcasts, but I can't find them anywhere. Does MLB.TV have his broadcasts or someone elses? Does it work well in Ames?

On MLB.com you can generally choose from either the home or away audio, but if you are watching the game it is always the home audio.
