I don't fault them for not developing some of the characters more. Character development shouldn't be priority #1 in a movie that we know what's going to happen to them in the end.
I didn't find myself very invested in A Force Awakens's characters either. Not that they were bad...it's just basically impossible to replicate the iconic presence of the original 3.
It's amazing. 10/10 and easily in the top 2 Star Wars films of all time.

Still tracking fairly strong on rotten tomatoes, albeit not quite The Force Awakens strong. These are still very strong numbers. One thing I've found interesting is that the reviews have pretty much tracked a little higher as they've all funneled in when usually the opposite happens. Don't know why it is, but most the first reviews to be posted for movies like this tend to be more favorable than the later ones.

Unlike all the other Star Wars movies, this one is not about the characters. It's about the mission. I think it's why it stands out so much. It didn't get too bogged down developing characters. Instead it told the story an important moment in the Star Wars timeline.
However, if someone who's never seen the movies before watches them in chronological order, the movie wouldn't be nearly as good. Already being familiar with A New Hope makes this one special with how closely it ties in to it.

As a huge John Williams fan, Giacchino's poor impersonation really was a distraction for me. To be fair, he was given an unfairly short amount of time to work on the score.
Some of the dialogue got bogged down in unnecessarily long speeches. A lot of cliches and nostalgic nods had me rolling my eyes.
The climatic battle is one of the best of the franchise. Vader has a scene towards the end that had me going, HOLY ****! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! I could've watched another 90 minutes of Darth whoopin' rebel scum.

Completely agree, but I liked the blind dude and his friend. They were bad mofos!! The story is what I was most interested in and it was solid. The tie in to A New Hope was great but seeing Dart Vader was probably the highlight of the film. I had low expectations because, let's face it, film making has gone way down hill in the last decade, but this movie was actually pretty darn good. I was not disappointed. Anyone who likes The Force Awakens more that this is just crazy.
I always thought the force awakens was a little too shiny. And it was a little too reliant on nostalgia instead of forging its own story. This movie doesn't have that problem. The highlight other than Vader was how it tied in to a new hope. A different kind of nostalgia I guess but not as obvious. The one fail was character development as I felt worse when the droid died than any of the human characters. But I still really liked the movie.
Just got back from seeing it. My initial thought after was very meh. The more I think about it, the more I did enjoy it. It does tie into New Hope well, but still brought in many different characters and stories.
The CGI characters were awful though. A big negative to me.

Just got back, absolutely loved it. I was not a big fan of the Force Awakens, but this one checked all the boxes for me. Lots of great easter eggs hidden in there too.
