Andor and Mando set a high bar for the franchise and did it almost entirely without the space wizards and the force... it's wild to me that the productions with the most access to those parts of the lore (Acolyte, sequel Trilogy, Ahsoka at times) have a hard time getting out of their own way.
I don't think its about the Force or lack thereof. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE STORY. And it always has been.

Mando and Andor both had good stories; they also both dug into a genre that was broadly appealing to a more general audience (cutesy western for Mando, big brother oppression for Andor).

Last Jedi (and really the entire post-trilogy) were just incoherent and rambling and made zero sense. That's why they were so reviled. The prequel trilogy had its issues to be sure, but at least there was a story arc with the fall of Anakin and parts of that were really really good.

Ahsoka, I am going to hold judgment on for now, too soon to tell if its just building to something great, or if they are just wandering around going "Thrawn bad".

I think what made SW cool from the start was that it had consequences. And it wasn't all shiny like Buck Rodgers. Characters were serious and the only comic relief needed was the droids. That started to change with the Ewoks, but everyone kind of looked past that. Then there was like 15 years of nothing. SW fans were starved for content. Then the prequels came out and Lucas overused CGI. The Gunguns were dumb, Anakin was too young, too much cutesy and too much shiny CGI. Not that there weren't good parts.

Everything since has been some degree of a nostalgia money grab. Especially the sequels, which were basically retconning the OT except they had no likeable characters. I think that Andor has really good writing and good characters. Mando too at least early on...it kind of went off the rails in S3. I had high hopes for Acolyte, but it wasn't good at all. Skeleton Crew basically being SW Goonies I'm not excited for. Honestly, the best writing/stories/characters outside of Andor has been Clone Wars and Rebels.

These are my thoughts to a T. Well said.

To add to your first sentence about consequences, they've brought so many people back from being "dead" it drives me insane. A lightsaber wound means almost nothing anymore.

The only retconned death I'm ok with is Maul's because his story arcs in Clone Wars and Rebels are so damn good. And I love the idea that he survived, albeit barely, by pure hatred of Obi Wan and needed literal witchcraft to return to form.

The video game Star Wars Outlaws comes out next week. Seen a lot of positives on it, enough that I'll check it out.

I think this game is going to flop pretty hard. Why they didn't just make the game and plot based around Han Solo is a mystery to me. I think that game would be a pretty big hit with fans.

Also, the graphics on the play footage were pretty bad....likely Playstation 2 explosion graphics type bad.

The other thing that was kind of unique was random throw-in references to other things in this giant mysterious universe.
The Clone Wars? That sounds cool, wth is that all about?
Boba Fett, he looks bad-ass! What's his story?
Just a lot of backstory that was really left to the imagination.

Well, now trying to fill in those giant spaces on the canvass, you lose that mystery. And sometimes you replace the mystery with absolute crap. As much as anything, I think this is the biggest challenge in filling in the canvass for Disney.

Absolutely agree. I was 6 when Empire came out and 9 for ROTJ. This was 100% in my wheelhouse. I totally remember playing on farm equipment where the planter was an X-wing and the combine was the death star. And a lot of times when we were grabbing random tools to be lightsabers or blasters, we were imagining intercepting the death star plans or fighting in the clone wars. We had no idea what the actual story was or if there even was one, we just made it up. Now, instead of something new, they are just filling in every detail of the backstory. The Acolyte was something new and I was excited for it, but they screwed it up.

Anyone else watch Skeleton Crew? I didn't have high hopes because a) The Acolyte was *fart noise* and b) it really felt like a kids' show. After watching, though, I think it being a kids' show was actually why it was good fun.

It brought back some of the wonder and awe that we should feel in the Star Wars universe. Jude Law was terrific and the kids were endearing. Another example that modern Star Wars works best as a setting, not as the story itself.

And thank god they didn't cram a cheap lore connection into it for the finale. I have no doubt they could in the future. For now I'm just relieved that Thrawn didn't show up or that Jod didn't name drop a known Jedi when talking about his master. They let the show live on its own, which made it better.

Countdown to Andor: 90 days!

I watched the first couple episodes and appreciated it being a good kids show but I couldn’t get into it. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad show but a 40 year old guy is not the demographic.

Skeleton Crew was well done and an example of what quality staff can accomplish, much like Andor. I just hope it gets the views it deserves, but am concerned Acolyte pooched it being so soon after.

Might want to try finishing it out, there arent that many episodes. I hope it comes back honestly. I can see where you might have been turned off a bit, but I think they can build a world out of it that resonates with other ages.

Technically the series has a connection to S3 of The Mandalorian. The Nikto pirate was a part of the pirates that attacked Nevarro. He ran after those pirates got defeated and I'm pretty sure his character got left behind on At Attin when these pirates fled. Setting him up to be some through line character in the Mandoverse, kinda like a 'bad guy' version of Hondo Onaka.

Series was definitely geared towards youngers viewers. Still an enjoyable watch for older viewers as it didn't quite hit the kid level writing of the "let's try spinning" scene of TPM.

Didn't get all the hate for Acolyte. Really liked Skelton Crew up until the last episode. I hope there is a second season and the tie some loose ends up or some connection with Mandalorian happens.
