Special Teams

Who is the Special Teams coach this year? Did we revert back to not having a coach assigned to Special Teams? How are we supposed to be an elite team if we don’t prioritize all phases of the game?

Haven’t read through this but before injuries, our special teams was probably one of the best in the country. First it was Flora then Gilbert and Konrardy. Even Tre Bell was great in kick coverage but had to be taken off when he became the #1 CB. Perkins has remained elite. He will be missed next year not only for his punting but also bailing out several bad snaps as holder.

We have at least two in fact, our first and second string kickers who are either hurt or recently back.
True, but I’m still surprised there isn’t a former HS kicker on the roster that can do this. Watching 4A and 5A football the last couple years it looks like kids that can kickoff deep into or out of the end zone pretty much are a dime a dozen any more.

Maybe im being naive but it seems to me on a team of 85 young athletes at the peak of their physical lives we should be able to find someone that can kick the ball off a tee deeper than the 15 or 20 yard line. Im not talking about making a field goal through uprights im talking about kicking the ball 65 yds off a tee. The short kickoffs have absolutely destroyed this team in every loss.
We do. We have 2 that have been hurt. Our third guy can but puts them out of bounds too often. Our emergency guy is erratic but puts it to the five on a line drive that makes longer returns easier. There is more to putting the ball to the five. If it’s to the five and low, it’s worse than to the 15 with a lot of height that allows the defenders a chance to get downfield.

How many roster spots do you want to chew up with kickers? 6 or so? We have 2 and JG is out and it’s best to have KK not do it so he doesn’t tweak something.

It seems like 6 months ago, but I recall special teams being solid overall the first few games, some areas close to outstanding. No immediate stats to back that, it's mainly from memory.

Chase Smith was 4A, it doesn't seem like he has the leg to kick it to the end zone from what we've seen though. Don't high schools kick from the 40 though too?

HS is 40. Throw in that if the ball crosses the end zone line at all it’s automatically a touchback.

Minus the iowa game where we had a very similar "clear away from the ball" issue

I didn’t read the rest of the thread so maybe this was already discussed but it looks like the BYU player more or less drags/pushes the ISU player into touching the ball on the punt. I didn’t take time to look it up in the rule book but I assume if the refs would have seen it then this wouldn’t have been a turnover.

Edit to add this post that I saw in the replies, which seems to confirm it shouldn’t have been a turnover.

Iowa 5-6 years ago and now BYU. Twice in recent memory is far too many for such an unforced error.
