Special Teams

How hard is it to find someone that can kick touchbacks and find someone that can consistently make 30-40 yard FG’s? Can’t wait to find out in Season 8.
schools like UNI and Drake can do it consistently. its ST negligence that a school like ISU cant.

I didn’t think our special team people were that bad, they just needed a LITTLE coaching.

I think Perkins could be pretty good. Generally speaking, I'd like to see him on the field as little as possible.

At kicker, I don't care how but they need to find an average D1 kicker this off-season. You need to be able to kick from further than 30 yards and need to routinely get the ball to the end zone on kickoffs. Gilbert doesn't have it.

so Drake had an equal kicker. how much NIL and transfer portal pull does non-scholoarship Drake have?
Jace was a very good kicker coming out of high school from the sound of it, it just turned out he couldn't handle kicking in college for whatever reason. Maybe he'll get a chance to get better, but it'd probably be best for everyone if that chance wasn't here.

to me kicker seems like an obvious position that you NIL vulture from smaller schools going forward. what is the point of wasting recruiting resources on either punter or kicker. just look through the lower leagues for guys with 2 years left who have performed well.

I don’t know if he’s ruined or not, but it’s not like he wasn’t well regarded far as I can tell.

High school numbers
The 6-1, 200-pounder made 81 of 82 extra points this season. Ninety percent of his kickoffs were touchbacks. He made 10 of 13 field goals, including a long of 52 yards. He also averaged 41.8 yards per punt.

It’s not just the specialists it’s the entire unit. We have no scheme to setup a return. Let it go or fair catch almost all the time. Shouldn‘t coach to avoid mistakes we should be coaching to add positive plays. Its pretty obvious they gave up on this unit last year.

I'll say that in my opinion, the coaching to add positive plays vs avoiding mistakes is a big issue on offense, too.

-I actually like Tyler Perkins. Made some freshman mistakes, but overall he was decent this year.
-Jace Gilbert was ok earlier in the year but he is not very accurate. Just a freshman, so he has time to improve.
-Agreed that it is pathetic we never have a kicker that can get touchbacks.
-Campbell has been scared to attempt punt returns since the muff against Iowa however many years ago. I don't get (or like) this strategy.
-Noel is not a good kick returner.
-Kick and punt coverage was not horrible.

Place kicking is very similar to hitting a golf ball, except for 20 athletes crashing around the kick.

A consistent miss is very attributable to a swing flaw. Has he had a consistent miss? Is this also in practice situations? If so, then work through swing changes.

If there is not a consistent miss,.....good luck. Look for a "head" coach or move on.

Agree with all,

And will add: Noel is not a good kick returner OR punt returner.

How he didn't lose that job blows my balls off.

Maybe our fg kicking problems are the holder or the long snapper. Kicker can't kick off they aren't getting him a consistent ball

I wouldn’t be surprised that it is coaching input on what not to do instead of positive visualization. That’s the kind of approach issue that could come from no special teams coach.

I don't remember it being a problem his first couple years. Definitely became a problem in 2019, starting with the muffed punt against Iowa.
We had a ST’s coach those years. Didn’t have the title every year he was here, but similar to Mouser, worked with the TE’s already before being promoted to TE’s coach.

So a true freshman kicker goes something like 12-20 and your writing him off as a failure? How many other freshman had to play day 1?

If Gilbert is a competitor, I would expect him to come back and have a solid 2023.

I put our FG kicking woes on the coaching staff. Just like offense and defense position players, they need to recruit with the mindset that guys hone their craft for a year or two and hopefully are prepared to start.

The reality is we got very fortunate with Mevis as a transfer.
