There's enough boot wears here I figure this is a good place to ask. I got some new boots a few weeks ago, normally I've worn 6" tall lace up boots and have for years but decided to try some slip ons last year and liked the idea but not the execution for the 6" slip ons. So a few weeks ago I got a pair of taller Wellington style pull on boots. What I wasn't prepared for is needing taller socks. I've been messing around with a few different ones but I haven't found any yet that consistently stay in place. I've rubbed my calves raw in a couple spots because of my socks slipping down. I think I want some over the calf socks but I don't want to spend $30 a pair on darn tough ones, they don't stay in place anyway. Anybody got some recommendations for decent tall socks that stay put? I'm mostly indoors so if they were thinner athletic style socks I'd prefer that.

I've always just bought socks slightly taller than the boots and folded them out over the top of the boot. Helps keep the laces in place and keeps the socks up. I hate tall boots though so I can't help you there. Been rolling with the Keen Cincinnati's for awhile now.

I wish I had good info for you but all I can think of is this...

Darn Tough socks its all I wear, I have to wear Steel toe boots and I swear by them, they are made of wool right here in good ole Vermont USA and come with a lifetime gurantee and will replace them if they wear out for free (might have to pay tax on a new pair but thats it)

Edit: just saw you don't want to spend the money for darn tough but i've had no issue with them and if you buy the right ones, or at least mine dont slide down.

Smartwool for everything, always.

I wear Darn tough for everything, all day all the time...walking (12-15 miles/week), biking, hiking, working, tennis shoes, trail runners, cycling shoes, Merrils, Obos hiking boots. I get the hiking version and so its a mid thickness. I have never had an issue with them moving around. As well, I just sent in 3 pairs due to holes, and got free replacements.

May consider looking at a different thickness/style of sock with the darn tough. I think they have 3 thickness if you will,

Bombas are the answer for socks and slippers. A bit pricey but worth it. Get to feel good about buying too since they donate a pair everytime you buy.

Darn Tough are true miracle products.

I go on 2 week long mountain backpacking hikes where I cover like 200 miles. I bring just two pairs and air one out while I sleep in the other. At the end of the trip my feet don't even smell and the socks aren't even gross. Obviously key to stay warm, but the trick is they totally neutralize any sweating. Some pairs of these I've been using for like 10 years now.

Smartwool brand isn't bad either but they are not as durable as Darn Tough.

Maybe i need to try some more Darn Tough. I bought 2 pairs of ankle socks and they wore out quicker (still like 2 years of use) than my smartwool, and I didnt like the fit.

Totally agree. When I go on multi day trips where hygiene is a challenge, I've switched over to merino underwear too. Both are easy to wash in a stream and dry darn quick.

Sounds like either the boots are a little slim or your pants may be. These gotta be some tall boots also. When I wear slip on, I use the tall cheap socks from dollar general. Just throw them out when they get a little loose.

They are expensive but if you only wear them in boots/shoes they last a really long time. Just don’t walk around on hard floors or cement with them and you’ll be able to use a pair for a really long time.

So when do you plan to actually wash them?

I have cheap white puma socks from Costco and they never fall down, even with just regular shoes and jeans. The elastic is apparently permanent, as I have had them for several years.

If your boots like Wellies, try wearing two pairs at a time...crew work socks made of cotton blends with spandex inside wool socks.

I use the Puma ankle socks almost exclusively. They are absolutely top notch for the price.
