So, where do we go from here?

I have loved Iowa State since 1964
I cant hide the fact last night was the WORST basketball performance by Cyclone basketball in memory. I see all this love this morning for “bringing us back “ ???
To WHAT? A hideous performance??
I hope this staff can recruit and fast!!

Dumb take. Like really dumb. Like even worse than how the team played last night.

I can't imagine Brockington coming back. Whether it's NBA or Europe, he probably needs to go get paid at this stage of his career. Consequentially, ISU needs someone(s) who can create their own shot, they need a 3pt specialist/off the bench scorer, because Grill is awful. And they need a post who can rebound and is a decent threat to score. When Jones got that pass, all he had to do just lay it in, and instead he chose to dribble the ball, I wanted to scream.

You have a short term memory issue. The 36 point performance was worse and just a month ago. Then you have what is called the 2020-2021 season that most want to forget also but can’t.

I’m pretty pessimistic at times, but this may take the cake. Wasn’t even close to the WORST performance I’ve seen by the Cyclones. I realize this may be more of a knee-jerk frustration response after getting ousted from the dance, but WOW?!

I think another thing this would help with getting more FT attempts. In conference play, ISU was last in FTA. WVU and TTU both attempted nearly 120 more FTs than ISU.

Yep- with all the emphasis on analytics and 2 vs. 3-point shooting, getting fouled on a shot is still the highest % possession.

70% FT = 46.7% 3PT = 70% 2PT

They were bad. No different than majority of games. Still, there are 22 teams we beat. College basketball is down.

He was super skinny and super weak. He turned out ok.
And he had elite athleticism and skill. Holmgren might be really good but he is not on the same planet as Durant. If both were 6’8 Durant would’ve still been an elite prospect. Holmgrem would be just another guy.

Worst at getting to the line and worst at actually making FT, which actually effects the number of attempts, since they ISU missed a lot of front end of a lot of 1 and 1s.

The question is, how do you get more fouls?

Better athletes with better skills that dictate the movement.

If you can't get your opponent out of position even a 50/50 type play is likely not going your way.

This is similar to how ISU might be the most blocked team I've seen.

This is akin to sitting down to a steak dinner, with a beautiful 12 oz filet, a nice cabernet, fresh asparagus tips, au gratin potatoes, and a delicious souffle for desert and saying the meal sucked because they forgot croutons on you salad.

That’s not the point lol. Skinny and weak guys can be good in the NBA and have a frame to put on muscle. Durant couldn’t even bench 225 once when he was in college. The main point I was trying to make, is 7 footer who can put the ball in the basket aren’t horrible picks in the NBA no matter how skinny or weak they are in college.

  1. Have players who can drive to the basketball off their dribble & finish.
  2. Run an offense that gets post players paint touches (or invert guards).
  3. Back Screens
  4. Great Offensive Rebounding Team
In short- playing aggressive basketball in the paint, with players who play above the rim (can finish).

TJ did great with the team he built this season. Other than Hunter & Brockington we didn't really have many guys who can play above the rim or score off their drive.

But also think back over the final Prohm years- we didn't see many alley-oops or players go up in traffic and slam-it either. Not shooting free throws has been an ISU issue for a few years.

Lot of good points in this thread, just would like to add my 2 cents that I don't think has been mentioned: everyone coming back next year will be a year older with experience playing together, while a lot of the teams they lost to will get younger and less experienced. Teams like Miami, Texas, Texas Tech. In conference, Kansas and Baylor will probably reload, but I think finishing above 0.500 in conference play and hopefully 3rd is a reasonable goal.

I just want to say, for the record, I think everyone is underestimating Robert Jones. He is a tough minded and tough playing kid. I believe his deficits are extremely fixable. Although he didn't finish around the hoop too often...... he finished some shots that totally amazed me.
He needs to hit the weights, work on hand strength, awareness of where is in relation to the basket, and shoot 100 free throws a day.
I believe he will have an amazing year next year!

Surfin' around and keep coming back to CF forum and seeing this thread title. Title has now given me an old rock and roll ear worm to Rock On by David Essex.

And where do we go from here?
Which is a way that's clear?

Which would actually be a pretty good thread title.

Dude, doncha love digital? (only cure for an ear worm is to listen to the entire tune)

Lol, 4 teams made more FTs than we even attempted. On top of us having the lowest make percentage. That hurts.
