Skills Camp?

Since we seem to need height and rebounding for next season's ('10-11) team, who would seem to fill that role best?
This is actually a pretty interesting question...Cyismydog and I talked about this quite a bit...In terms of what we need with our 3 open scholarships. IMO going into camp we need two wings and a big. The bigs that seem to have the most appeal from Mac were Haley, Jackson, and Green(but Green thinks he's a 3). Leaving camp I felt like DeMarcus Phillips was too good to pass up...so if we take a guard, do we not take wing or a big?

Best Player there:
Demarcus Phillips:
Strong, Physical, above average shooter, great handle and penetration. very good vision, a combo guard who is very good
Others who stood out:
Ejim: He's built. He's athletic, and goes hard all the time. He's a good shooter, though his three took a little while to get going. His defense is unbelievable. In all the time I watched him, he was scored on once. He is extremely long, athletic, quick, and has a deadly mid-range jumper.
Staten: 6'1", but his wingspans got to be 6'4"-6'5". He was the quickest player there by far, and can score in a million different ways. He is way farther along at the same age than Chasson Randle was last year, and Chasson's ranked 31st in his class and on the U-16 national team. He does kick his elbow out a little on his jumper.
Will Clyburn: Skinny, athletic, long, very good shooter, though he doesn't elevate a ton on it.
Norvell Arnold: SCC 3. Great shooter, hit 5 threes in a row. Decent athlete, decent bounce, good defender
Kadeem Green: 6'8", really, really long and athletic. Good handle, solid turn-around jumper. Needs to spend more time in the post, where his lengthand athleticism would wreak havoc.
Phillip Jackson: Tall, athletic, has the frame to add a lot of weight. Solid jumper, favorite move is a fade-away jumper in the post, a la Craig
Deonte Burton, 2013: 6'4", approx. 200 lbs, and not an ounce of fat. Oh yeah, he's a guard. He has a slick handle, a good jumper, though it's a bit flat. He understands the game well, and can post up smaller players, repeatedly hitting a baby hook over smaller and bigger defenders.
Elgin Cook: Great athlete, 6'5", Great defender. Alvin Robertson's son. Not a good shooter by any stretch of the imagination, but is hard to stop when he attacks the basket
Darnell Harris: Kid can shoot, and post up. Very good passer too. He's one to watch.
Dre Henley: I love his game, have since his freshman year. Right now, he's a 6'5"-ish wing (lefty) that's a very good shooter and passer. He's quick, and is a student of the game. His dad is 6'11", and he definitely looks like he's not done growing. He's crafty, and can penetrate really well. When he draws the double, he can kick out and find the open man very easily. He's good, one of my favorites.
Mohmhed Fall, Cloud County Juco: He's very strong, uses his body really well in the post, and gets good position. He's slightly raw, but he has a high ceilining with his athleticism and strength.
Buckley is much, much better. He has dropped bulk for lean muscle, is much quicker, his shot is very good, and his defense has really, really improved since last year. He found guys really well. I would be very, very suprised if he isn't the starter all year next year.
Ham's mid-range jumper is deadly. He hit 18-20 while I was watching. He is a little quicker, and is adding some moves around the post.
Gilstrap is good. Very good.

Norvell Arnold would be a steal a tough NYC kid with a big upside. He can do it all and would be a steal. Lock him up before St.John's and Seton Hall comes calling!

Just an honest question: Are you a relative of Norvell's?

Thought be played better on Saturday then he did Sunday...Did have couple really nice plays. I remember talking about him with Cyismydog.

No I'm from Burlington, I've seen this kid play all season long he's a good player under the radar. He will be one of the best wing players in juco basketball this year.

Okay, thanks for the info. I think I'll check out a game this winter when they play MCC.

What????? Surely, you can't be serious??????? Very, very surprised if he isn't the starter all year next year???? I hope he is improved, but that is a bold statement.

Actually...pretty darn accurate.
At the end of last year, he showed flashes of being able to play in a way DG cannot. There is something to be said for the pressure that a "lean" into the defender, bulldog like pg can do versus DG's silky-smooth/finesse, but the defender is "leaning" on you type. Does not hurt that his outside shot is also a little better than DG's.
But it was just flashes, and he has a long way to go. My personal hope is he becomes a taller Bryon Eaton type pg.

I agree...I was wrong in how long in took him to get there. Personnally, I want DG off the ball; just don't like how the defender gets up underneath him.

When discussing the potential of DG vs Buck, I think of a football saying. "It is better to be the hitter, than the hitee(sp?)". DG may be more apt at dribbling, but he has to be as he struggles to dictate the play.
I just want better pg play. Buck surpassing DG would only be great for the team; DG is not regressing. It does leave an interesting dilemma in that I would still feel DG is one of our top 5 players, but where does he play? If he or Buck were great outside shooters, there would be no problem.

Of all the problems this team could be facing, this one seems pretty good:smile:

Nice info guys...my head is spinning a little here though. I might have to read this thread over a few times. Oh, I hate to be 'that guy' but why wasn't HB there?

I think HB was at the NBA camp, or at least it somewhat conflicted. If the timing was better, HB and Randle would have been able to come. My question is why the staff preferred to have Gessell, Carter, Paige, etc attend the earlier camp. If you add all these players, the camp would have been loaded.
