Should Dekkers Start against UNLV?

ASU was a 30 point favorite against UNLV this past weekend. If we’re only a 10 point favorite, then we might as well pack it up and call it a season.
I don’t know that it’s the end of the season- we just haven’t proved anything to anyone yet. 10 points might be too low, but I could see the spread being in the high teens. Anything over that, I’ll take the opponent and points for the 3rd week in a row and make some easy money.

We need to start putting points on the board. Whether we start making changes with Manning or Brock or both, I’m not sure. But something is definitely not right and we need to make some adjustments immediately.

It's not about what have you done previously. It's about what you are doing now. We have 1 passing Td so far this season and that was thrown by Dekkers. Unaceptable! Put in the dude who gives us the best chance to win.

Even Sacramento St threw for 350 yards against UNI. Something isn't right with Brock this season.
This is genuinely worrying. Unless Sac St has better players, the scheme desperately needs work/the offense needs a shakeup.

We should always start the players that give us the best chance to win. If the INTs had all been horrible throws, I would say that might be Dekkers. But we had

  • An underthrown deep ball. If our receiver had a height advantage, he could have helped by breaking that up. Looks like he mis-timed his jump. Would like to watch this again.
  • A pass deflected at the line
  • An accurate pass thown through the concrete gloves of our receiver

I don't think you bench a 3 year starter for that. The real question that casual fans have a hard time picking up: is he missing reads and open receivers? Did Dekkers have success against the same players and scheme from Iowa that Brock faced, or had they backed off by that point?

All that said, I am thoroughly underwhelmed by our Heisman hopefuls. On paper, they were the two best players on either offense going into the game. They should have been key ingredients to a win. Think it is time that the fanbase cease using the H word. Not happening.

Different topic: should Sanders jump Brock in the depth chart?

I expect that this could be like Brocks breakout game vs OSU a few years ago. He gets the start. Then dekkers will get a series and 1 will earn the rest of the series from there.

We go through this every year.

It is not Iowa. It’s not UNI is a tough matchup. It’s not the weather against Drake. Or UL. Or whatever pillow fight for 3 quarters against a MAC team.

It is Manning and CMC either thinking they are something they are not, or just really bad strategy (CMC) and tactics (Manning’s **** play sequence). Our offense is whatever the opponent’s offense dictates and just chronically bad special teams

Not having an offense would be a plus if it came primarily with some creativity, deception, or flexibility. Instead we have poor execution and timing from half-assing and jabbing

A bit different Purdy replacing Zeb Noland than Dekkers taking over for a 3 year starter. Unless Purdy is hurt I don't see this playing out.

Unfortunately Iowa is just a bad matchup for us. Our offense is conservative and wants to eat up the clock but that plays into their strength.

Is Purdy healthy?

Purdy defacto replaced the incumbent in Kempt, who had an injury that resulted in a poor performance in GM1.

Replacing Purdy with freshman Purdy wouldn’t be bad

Campbell really believes the "win in the margins" business, and it is true. Other things being equal, attention to detail and avoiding mistakes will always put you in position to win against opponents who do not do those things. Conservative game plans tell you they are building around that idea, but it is meaningless when the players fail to follow through and execute on it.

Brock has been playing like he's been told to limit mistakes and not risk injury. This reduces the intangibles that made him a great player for ISU.

Punt and kickoff receiving units are taught that this is an area of the game that can only hurt you, the result being the simple act of receiving a kick becomes a pressure situation, and not an area where you can flip the field.

The refusal to adapt offensively when the game plan fails is the most frustrating part. They believe in the plan, right up until the clock runs out on it.

Part of what made Campbell the right choice to coach Iowa State was his dogged determination and belief that doing things his way would lead to winning, and it has. But there are things about his approach that makes winning hard sometimes. Go ahead, flame away at me.

Coaches all believe in good blocking and tackling, but it doesn’t mean they all can coach it.

Every coach preaches win the margins, we’re just really shockingly bad at it for a staff that is focused on it. At one point we hadn’t won the TO margin in 13 out of 17 games. We hemorrhage field position. We’re neither risk averse or risk taking. We make mistakes while not having the upside of taking chances.

I actually think they pivot too often. They mirror the opponent’s offense. Big 12 spread team one week, Big 10 West another…
Instead of doing whatever the **** we did for 6 quarters, just run what you’re good at until you’ve perfected it or stopped. You don’t see Leach change game-to-game.

winning the margins isn’t the same as ball control. It’s execution. We’re not good at ball control, and it shows in our execution. Do what you do well. Scheme to mitigate what you don’t.

If you’re having to escape UNI in 3OTs because of pathetic offense, you’re not maximizing the margins. You’ve put ball control, something you can’t teach/coach well (Manning and ST coach), over execution. That’s not winning the ******* margins

You need another option. I think Purdy should start, but Campbell should keep him on a short leash and yank him if he starts messing up again.

Brock will start the rest of the way and we'll miss him but I feel pretty good about life after him. Dekkers has a higher ceiling.

I'm with C-dub from the instant reaction that something *seems* to be going on behind the scenes. Enough to bench Purdy and possibly take his head out of it for weeks to come? No. But if he craps the bed next week then it's coming to Jesus time.

What is it with fans and their infatuation with backup QBs?

I like Dekkers and I'm excited for his future because of his poise and laser/rocket arm. Our 4 year starter and potentially best QB we've ever had isn't getting permanently benched for Dekker's future potential.
I think it’s an infatuation with offense.

Purdy is closer to Richardson than the best Qb we’ve ever had. But we can win with him if he’s mostly doing what he’s good at. He’s not. So calling for Dekkers is mostly a way around calling for a new OC, because only one of these things has any chance of happening mid season

I don’t think the obvious average to below average arm strength of Brock Purdy is “behind the scenes”.

maybe a coincidence, but every time the showed Purdy was shown on TV on the sideline, Kyle Kempt was in his face, in his ear, etc. If its all that complicated, then simplify it and let the kid play. Purdy was more fun to watch when just went out there and made plays.

to say Dekkers only played in garbage time isn't completely accurate - he replaced a struggling Purdy and I dont think that happens that early unless there is some thought in the locker room he could make the team better this year. There was still some chance to close the gap and he did pretty well doing it, a bit better bounce on the on side and who knows.

If any kid needs competition to be at their best, let it happen but I am rooting for Purdy to find his groove (and the whole offense).
