Session 2 (Day 1, evening) Thread

Just keep supporting them, we need 7 - 8 AA's with 1 or 2 of those Champs to stay close. Its a good team and there are many good wrestlers in the brackets.

Fanthorpe loss was huge. Needed him to advance.

Nick can still get valuable points for us.

I was looking at the other consolation matches and noticed that Bubba Jenkins from Penn State has lost his second match. He was seeded #2 but was pinned by Brent Metcalf in the Big 10 tourney. Anyway, that was kind of a surprise for him to lose his first two matches.

I *THINK*, because of the pigtail round in the cons. bracket, that it's tied at 32.

A win in the cons. is only worth 0.5. Tshirt got another point for the major. He also got 2.5 for a forfeit in his next match. So really it was a 4 point win for him. Making the score...

Iowa 34
ISU 32

I don't know if Ward or Beatty have wrestled yet.

This is correct, Tshirt will score another 2.5 before he even steps on the mat tomorrow so that might as well get added in now.

Right, but Tshirt had a bye in Cons. round 1, which means he earned another .5 for the Cons. round 1 bye.

So --

0.5 advance plus 0.5 for "proving" his rnd. 1 bye
1 point for major

2 points earned. If the med. forf. is official, then add another 2.5.

'Course I'm prob. wrong -- something special with cons. bracket or something.

I'm not sure about the bye. The guys on Hawk Report said it was a 4 point win and they are usually right when it comes to wrestling. Either way, it was a big win for Iowa.

I'm assuming that the pigtail match in the cons. bracket counted for .5, so it's at least logical that the bye would also.

I've never understood this whole injury forfeit scoring points equal to a pin thing.
I think the logic is this: If you're badly injured (broken back, to demonstrate the extreme) and you still wrestled, your opponent is guaranteed to be able to pin you. Therefore, if you're injured and can't compete, you must accept a pin instead. Can't use an injury to avoid getting pinned.

Now, obviously, in a dual meet, that arrangement properly rewards/penalizes the teams. In a tournament, it isn't as direct -- but I guess the logic is -- why change it for a tournament?

Good luck, bad luck -- make your own luck.

Totally agreed in a tournament format. These are points that Iowa doesn't really deserve. Just luck. They are the last team that needs any freebies.

What stinks, is that as the matches go further, bonus points in theory are harder to capture as competition gets harder (with maybe Metcalf being the exception). So I think for us to win, we need to win pretty much all close matches and we need Iowa to slip and have a couple unexpected loses that drop a couple guys out from AA status.

Metcalf's ability to score bonus points makes up for at least a couple potential Iowa errors. He's huge for them, his bonus points account for an another complete wrestler.
