Instead of trashing Scales...don't you think its possible he's put together a good spring, summer, and fall? He looks like he's gained some weight, why is it so far-fetched that he went out and earned the #1 spot?

I really don't think there is a number one spot I think two guys will get 10-15 carries a game and another guy will get 5-10. The more number of carries ISU has in a football game the better because that means they are winning and running out the clock.
I'll reserve judgement on the new staff until they have some history here, but it did seem like we lost an inordinate number of players to injury with the previous group. I hope we see an improvement in this area.
I understand that people are frustrated with Scales being injured pretty much since he got to Ames, but for those who saw him at Valley, like me, a healthy Scales as a starter for us this year would be a good thing.
I know there is a big difference between 4A Iowa high school football and the Big XII, but Jason Scales could hit holes and break tackles like no one else I have seen in watching high school football in Central Iowa for the last 25 years.
Let's let it play out in practice, but I for one will not be suprised at all to see Jason as our starter. I have always felt they put too much weight on Jason and that has had an impact on his knee problems.

Exactly, if he is listed as #1, there is a reason. The guys that put him in the #1 position have forgotten more about football than any of us will ever know about it.
I hope Jason can be injury free and show us what he's got, but all that aside, one thing I am certain of is that Jason will be a success in life. I had a chance to very briefly meet him at the student success center opening and came away very impressed with him. He also spoke to the crowd that day and he just comes across as a very intelligent and mature young man.

Sorry...but to hear people trashing Scales pisses me off. The guy has done nothing but work hard on and off the field....stay out of trouble and be a good teammate. Injury's happen, I don't see anyone trashing Carper and they shouldn't, I think it is great Jason Scales is #1. He has shown allot of sdversity with his injuries and fought through them. He has done nothing but work hard in the Spring, Summer, and Fall Camp. I hope he has a good season and shuts all the "Scales" Haters" up.....

Good post Red...I totally agree. I would love to see Scales shut people up. I am not sure what he has ever done to anyone on here, but he seems like a class guy that has had some bad luck. I am rooting for Scales, I would love to see him as our next 1,000 yard rusher. I have nothing against JJ, but I will cheer for the best player to get that job. Right now the coaches have decided that is Scales, and I support it.
I have no fear that GC will play the guy that gives him the best chance to win games. That might be Scales, it might be Robinson, it might be Bass, it might be ............
The one nice thing I see in the whole situation is that no one knows who it will be, and GC has already said that if the starter is not getting things done in a game, he will give someone else a try. Sounds better to me than what we have seen in the past.
Good luck to Scales and I hope he is a great runner for ISU this year. I really like to see these guys that come back from injuries do well. At this point it is hard to convince me he is the best back ISU has because of what he has done so far for the Clones. I know he has been injured a lot, but I don't recall a single "wow" moment in his career to date, and he has been at ISU 3 years.

Sure....one was a redshirt year and he had 2 knee ops...
You tell me when the last time we had a "wow" moment from any running back....Ennis Haywood? How can you be a Stevie Hicks fan and come out and bash Scales. Its hard to convince you he is the best at this point? How many practices have you been to? How much film of practices have you watched? I suppose you think JJ BASS is the best option....hmmm....was at a JUCO last year....has practiced with the team now for about 16-days...you have never seen any film, seen him practice, or seen him play. He has bever played a Big 12 game and is learning the new system, But yet, per your "sight unseen" evaluation you can't be convinced Scales is the #1 right now???? You know what tells me he is the #1....the depth chart! Now I am not saying Bass or Robinson are not going to surpass him, but at this point, it is his job to lose and he has earned it. I bet we see him starting agianst Kent State. There are going to be changes in the depth chart the first 2-to-3 weeks of the season. Also, we are going to see 2 RB's getting allot of carries....with a 3rd getting some carries.

I am guessing I am wrong here, but I find it hard to believe Hicks ran for 1000 yards last year.....
As I supsected....no where near 1000 yards:
He was 1o7 carries for 523 yards.....2 TD's....

I said he had a 1000 yard rushing season, I didn't say last year. It was 2004.

I'd say last year when we had Koch in the backfield and we found out that he had an innate ability to run with the O-line that was given to him and had the ability to run over defenders. I wish we had him this season - we could really use a power back like that :sad:
And I think he got that in the 12th game (bowl game). I believe he just cracked 1,000 yards. Over 12 games, that's 83 yards per game...not overly impressive. I'm not a Stevie-hater by any means but a 1,000 yard back (much like the NFL) isn't too hard to come by if they stay healthy...especially now with 13 games.
