I liked the fact that we took a few shots down field. Thought we could have taken a few more. Penalties killed us. Turnovers killed us. Leading up to the safety, we had a 35 yard punt return called back because of a flag for a block to the back. Kind of an iffy call IMO. UNI player had turned when blocked and it looked to my like it was more of a block to his side and front. So instead of past midfield we are at the 11 yard line. Next play was when Warren was facemasked. Looked like the UNI player grabbed his earhole on helmet and you can clearly see his head jerk back. That is a facemask penalty. Automatic 15 yard and first down........not called. Lanning missed an open Ryen on a longer pass on second down. Then we had the 3rd down play where we called a timeout and went to an empty backfield and Lanning missed the signs and did not recognize the all out blitz and got a safety when we were at the freaking 11 yard line. Those series of consecutive plays is what killed us.

If we hired an offensive line guru, (and by all indications we have) its gonna take him time to make this patchwork group a decent functioning unit.

Gotta give it a few weeks, not reasonable to expect perfection in September.

Going back to the OP, I thought last year they shifted to a lot more straight handoff runs and a lot less of the zone read. And it sure seemed like it worked. Even in the 1st quarter my son and I were wondering why the zone read was back and no "traditional" run plays.
