Anyone know the recovery time from a torn labrium surgery? Will Rocco be available for spring practice, whether it's at psu or ISU? If very limited, how do you think it affects his decision, stay and miss installation of a new offense, or transfer to psu to a somewhat similar system in a totally new environment?

I can't speak for Rocco's case specifically of course or for high-level athletes in general, but for us normal-folk, it's a long one, 3+ months for substantial recovery and 6+ months before full recovery are not unusual.

I had a rotator cuff done a couple years ago and it was 6 months to be able to even lift my hand over my shoulder. Granted my doctor told me rotator cuff surgery was the longest recovery time for a shoulder surgery. I had a torn capsule done repaired in my 20's which was about 3 months before I was throwing again so Rocco being ready for spring ball probably isn't too out of the question.

Son has a buddy in HS (he’s in HS also) who had his surgery days after the state wrestling tournament and he played football this season. So mid February surgery and he was good to go by August 1st.

I haven’t been keeping up with the portal rumors, but do we think Rocco will be here?

He will be good to go wherever he is. He has been working out and using it that helps in recovery.

Considering he played what, about our last 7 games with this injury, it would be just like Rocco to take part in Spring practices. We all knew something didn't seem right, but now to know he kept playing through that pain and lack of mobility, just Wow, what a trooper and leader!! And then to be in the locker room for the Cy-Hawk game to give the ladies his support!! Hope he stays, but regardless, will always be a Rocco fan.

Def won’t be out there for spring at full speed. As others have said recovery is usually 1 month post surgery before full blown pt starts. Athletes may be different. PT around three months. With a young athlete he would likely be cleared to begin activity at that point, but not full practice.

The rumor mill states that his Dad would like to see him finish at ISU. So never say never. If he is staying I would like to see him trying to save some of these recruits and hopefully the upperclassmen.

I don't blame him either way, just like I don't fault Campbell for leaving.

I know most recruits sign to play for a coach more than a school, but some of these guys have invested 3 or 4 years in Ames and it may feel like home to them. Maybe several guys in that situation-Patton, Bacon, Hansen, Sama, Rocco etc-will stick together and "Run it Back" as the kids say. Just a thought I have no source

My guess is he ends up at Penn State. He has a great relationship with Mauser and Campbell and if he stays here he has to learn a whole new system. He'll have a bigger profile at PSU too if he is trying to get to the next level. I don't blame him or anyone else who leaves. The players got blindsided just like everyone else.

4-6 months seems accurate here. I had this same surgery in April, got to 95% recovered by September. the first 3 months were rough but smooth sailing since. I imagine with the training staff and PT Rocco has access to, he'll have a quicker recovery.

If surgery was done on his throwing arm, that would be a much different story for time to return. The steps (Healing, PT, stretching, strengthening) even prior to any throwing is a b!tch! Progressing to simply raising your arm above shoulder level is slow and painful.

With surgery being on his non-throwing arm won't necessarily speed the healing and recovery process, but could allow him a much faster return to throwing to get his arm strength and timing back.

I think the injury plays in our favor. He's reportedly making 1.5 mil here at ISU, is another program going to be willing to significantly up that given the recent surgery?

I agree here. After an injury why go elsewhere and have different doctors? Trainers? While going through rehab. Especially if he is making that much in NIL. Also I’m pretty sure his dad has huge influence on him, so if he is wanting him to stay one more year at ISU I imagine Rocco will listen.
