Another kid who I think was #4 and went to South Dakota State, I think he started at OSU or something like that. Didn't play a ton , right about the time Purdy took over.

And non of them had the offers out there that we were competing against this time. So we've lost essentially the backup almost every off-season or at worst #3. within the last 5 years

His dad is a better coach than the record shows too. He's dealing with a similar situation to a lot of the DSM metro schools has far as challenges with keeping kids eligible and out of trouble. If they could get some kids big enough to actually play on a 5A line to go out for the team they could be really good.

I didn't say we lost them all to NIL. Simply that we lost them. NIL is only going to increase the risk of losing people, especially given the offers some of them had.

And that's every kids right. I can't imagine being a good athlete at that level. And how hard it must be to sit. Better or worse, that was never my life. I tried, but was not talented enough to be any good really lol.

A young man or woman wants to play - then they should take every chance to play and chase that dream Life's too short otherwise. Football, life, whatever it is. I imagine it just makes running a program these days trickier. Maybe not, I have no idea.

The only part of me that wishes the rules were different is the selfish part. The part that remembers seeing the same players for 4-5 years every year. I miss that.

But I also miss Nebraska and Missouri and the old conferences where geography mattered. And historical rivalries mattered.

I really need to stop being a dinosaur I guess.

10-13 with 2 TDs and zero picks is about as good as you can play. He looks more ready than Kohl at the moment. Next Saturday will tell us a lot more.

And 2 of the 3 incompletes were slight overthrows that Rocco probably wants back. I don't recall a single "dangerous" pass or terrible throw from him. Iowa will present a much bigger challenge though.

If there is one knock - we have to clean up 3rd down conversions. 2/11 isn't going to be pretty if we carry that into next week.

Even after the gambling controversy it's bad form to throw somebody under the bus as a poor leader so you aren't going to see players and coaches come right out and say this, but with a full year of reading between the lines this is kind of what I gather.

There's also the effect that Purdy might have been such a wonderful leader that it was a real hangover to switch. The way the grizzled vets on the 49ers instantly were all-in for Brock really says a lot and it couldn't have been easy to lose something like that beyond just the QB stats.

Coming from extremely solid sources, the leadership in that position is glaring. Some times addition happens through subtraction.

One other thing to keep in mind - when was the last time we went a whole season with one QB taking every snap and not getting injured? Guys always get dinged. And sometimes they get hurt. Brock got his chance when Zeb went down.

It appears it's Rocco's show for now. But JJ is right behind if Rocco gets dinged. And who knows, maybe by week 9 JJ will have the position by the tail with a fence around it.

Zeb didn't go down, he just basically sucked. Kyle was the one who got hurt.

What is going to happen is smaller colleges become the minor leagues. LSU, Ohio State, etc, fill their needs with ready made players from smaller Power 5 schools or non-power 5 schools.

Those power 5 schools recruit a high school kid, develop him, and then when he's a junior, Alabama comes in with a million dollars or whatever it is and those 2-3 years developing that kid into a high level college player.

Jordan Addison at Pitt comes to mind.
Trent Dilfer at UAB went on a rant over the summer talking about this very thing.

I don’t blame the kid for chasing the money, but kind of poetic justice that the move from Pitt to USC didn’t help Addison’s draft stock at all. He did get the bag (just got busted for reckless driving in his lambo), but he was the 4th receiver taken, at the 23rd pick in the first round. I think draft prognosticators expected him to be the top receiver taken going into the 22 season. It didn't help competitively either. He won the ACC with Pitt while USC lost the P12 championship to Utah.

I was very happy that Zay Flowers, who probably had millions offered to him to transfer from Boston College, elected to stay at BC. He was picked before Addison and got a $7m signing bonus. Pretty cool to see.

I think it may be the sad reality...some of those transfers will end up sitting though. For guys that aren't NFL bound I guess that's their football career payday.

The red shirt strategy and playing freshman strategy is no longer just about getting somebody a year of experience and strength room, it's a little bit of holding your poker cards.

I think you'll see some guys opt for stability/certain playing time and less pay if they are on track for the NFL. That sounds like what happened with Tampa. He trusted the coaching staff and likes ISU, so he opted for Ames and a small NIL deal over big bucks and the uncertainty of joining another roster.

You kinda just made their point. That "filler talent" and those "upper 3 stars" are exactly the players the poster was talking about that could fall to the lesser P4 and G5 programs.

I don't know/remember the whole story, but I believe basically all those programs backed off or pulled their offers.
Possibly even ISU.

Seems we got pretty lucky to get him on campus. If he has the year we're expecting, hope we can keep him.

I think the Chiefs might like a crack at him...this year!
