How do they not have detectors then? They should have went off well before the levels it would kill someone. I was making chicken broth once in my stove and forgot to turn on the exhaust fan and mine went off well before I even noticed any effects.

Yeah that I don’t know. I’ve never owned a gas stove, so I’m not familiar with the safety mechanisms in place.
I do know my boss once went on a work trip once and accidentally left the gas stove on. And came home to the house full of gas. So, I’ve heard about that happening first hand.
He was awesome as the reverend in the Poseidon Adventure, one of the early disaster movies back in the 70's.
I remember first seeing that movie and thinking how scary it could be if someone got on the wrong side of somebody in the government.

I won't own a gas stove range again after my last one failed. One evening our carbon monoxide detector went off so called Mid American out and they were struggling to find the source. Asked us if we had used the gas stove at all which we had but it was several hours prior. They turned it on and got a reading and it was putting out very high levels of carbon monoxide so I am guessing it had been doing that for awhile and just never was prolonged enough to trigger the alarm or maybe we had some windows open that kept the levels in the house down. Asked them why it took so long for the alarm to go off and since the alarm was in another room of the house they assumed it must have taken awhile for the gas to make its way throughout the house to a level to trigger the alarm and was likely just concentrated in the kitchen at first. Installed 220 in the kitchen and installed an electric range in its place. While I like the gas stove top for cooking apparently it is pretty common for the oven part of the unit to eventually deteriorate over time and start emitting unhealthy levels of carbon monoxide.

I’m not sure why I remember this, but when Johnny Orr was coaching here, he and his wife felt pretty sick one winter. As I remember it lasted for a while until they eventually figured out it was a CO leak.
The wife was found next to a space heater. Isn't that something that could be dangerous with CO?
The one dead dog and two surviving dogs is throwing me off. Also the fact that the front door was open.
Like Gene Hackman, the Van Dyke brothers grew up in Danville, IL. These days, nothing good comes from Danville, IL. (Had to put the IL on there as there is also a Danville, IA down by Burlington).
I was surprised to learn Hackman attended Storm Lake High School his sophomore year right before he joined the Marine Corps at the age of 16.
The dog in the closet probably had no access to water. Why you wouldn’t let your dog out before ingesting a handful of pills is a little odd but this story is already pretty crazy.
And then the dog ate some of the pills that were on the floor. Who knows, we'll find out soon enough
