Remembering two important World War 2 events

Tarawa - November 1943

D-Day - June 1944

Iwo Jima - February 1945

Okinawa - April 1945

IMHO, it's likely that many Americans today are not aware of the savagery and awful pain:

When I gave tours in the museum we had Harold Pie Kellers family come down during our Iwo Jima memorial. We also the the worlds most expert on Iwo Jima give a speech. He is currently writing a book and it’s going to be a must read.

thanks. I took down my post because like you said this is a day of remembering our nations finest. Glad you mentioned Leahy, some scholars said he was the second most powerful man in the world. Glad we can honor Iowans who played a huge role. Thanks for your input. Did not know the story of him going to Hampton.

I'll edit my posts, too. Best wishes.

Soldiers in the heat of battle never lost their sense of humor. During the Japanese attack on my cousins ship, which sunk it, I was able to get a copy of the radio logs from their operator,
“We are under attack from 16 Japanese planes.
“The enemy is jamming our signal.
“Mamma always told me I’d have days like this.”

Drew0311, hope you don't mind if I add this 10 second video to the thread.

Guess we've strayed a bit from D-Day, sorry. In a way, though, these battles, and the many lesser-known ones, are all scenes of the one story. 16 million Americans in uniform during WWII.

It’s hard to fathom that the Japanese killed approximately 25 million Chinese, Koreans and Vietnamese during the war. And that doesn’t even start to count the soviets and Jewish people in the European theater killed by Hitler.

In the Battle of Midway, we sent 27 ships. Two years later in the Battle of Phil Sea, due to the American industrial might we sent 129 ships. And unlike the Japanese, the same month, we sent an Armada to France that had even more craft. It was incredible how the United States was able to manufacture all those ships in a short amount of time. The navy at Midway was not the same navy at Phil Sea. Not even close.

Original images and soundtrack of the landing on **Omaha Beach**, on **June 6, 1944**.
Boundless homage and admiration for those young soldiers who came to liberate our country.

It is widely known that Hitler executed 6 million Jews in the Holocaust.

According to AI the broader impact of the Holocaust included the following statistics on non-Jewish victims:
  • Approximately 5 million non-Jewish victims were killed.
  • This includes around 1.5 million Romani people (Gypsies).
  • An estimated 250,000 disabled individuals were murdered under the T4 program.
  • About 3 million Polish Christians were also victims.
  • Thousands of homosexuals, political dissidents, and Jehovah's Witnesses were persecuted and killed.
  • The total death toll from the Holocaust is estimated to be around 11 million people.

The biggest injustice was not giving him the fifth star.

At that level it’s all about politics. Same reason Chesty Puller was awarded 5 Navy crosses and not at least two medals of honor. Back then the president and or VP didn’t like a general, they would not let them advance
