Sounds like you're getting conned. There's a place in between Ankeny and Bondurant that has a campground, but has a facility or two thats pretty darn cheap. I can't think of the name of it though.

This. My in-laws (mother in-law) wanted extended family to attend. Even though at their weddings, we didn't attend their rehearsals nor did we expect to.Who is paying for the rehearsal dinner? Also, how far out is the wedding? If the wedding date is too close, you might not even get the venue you want. Was this really the fiance's idea or was she encouraged by her parents. If she is getting pushed to do this, they should help cover the cost.
If you are responsible for paying, just do a grill out for burgers and brats and buy some beverages. If you really want some booze, go to a bar after the dinner.
When planning for a wedding, rational decisions can go out the window.

We used Raccoon River Park shelter in West Des Moines, Hickory Park BBQ catered, and BYOB, which requires you to have a police officer on site, but all in all very reasonable for wedding party and all out of town family guests.
Geisler Farms?
We had extenuating circumstances for a couple family members that led to their invite, but the rest were all wedding party and their direct family members. I didn’t hear any complaints about not being invited.
I think you feel like you should but in reality, nobody really cares that they’re not invited. They’ll just go to dinner on their own or with each other elsewhere. We also did the Sunday brunch too which was great. It helped me remember how my night went.
First wedding rehearsal was at the church's fellowship hall and I was told that all out of towners were coming. Had the old man smoke some meat and the church allowed BYOB.
Second wedding rehearsal was at a buddy's house in his backyard, grilled some burgers drank some beers and sent everyone on there merry way.
You can make it as expensive or cheap as you want. It's your wedding and if this doesn't work out, you can always right the wrongs when you go for number 2.

Agreed, we had family from California, Texas, Minnesota, and North Dakota and they were all invited to the rehearsal dinner.I guess you're lucky then.
We got married there on a Friday at 4pm, no booze, 15 people, under $500 for food, rental, and dessert.
You got me!I guess it will take the guy in Minnesota to correct this one for you...
1st. We both wanted to keep it low key and have large families. Would have been a 300 person wedding or the 15ish people the way we did it. Saved like 20-25k. We thought it was stupid to start off our marriage in that kind of debt.2nd or 3rd wedding for you?
How many people did everyone invite? We (wife was 85%) were in the 510-520 area. This was after some trimming.
