Redshirting players

I remember when Knott and Klein played as true freshman and everyone was critical of Rhoads for not redshirting them.

When is it time to get over Rhoads?

Another thing not taken into account here is that maybe these guys don't want to take an extra year in college. The players have to want to stick around another year. Also those snaps might not have changed the outcome of the game, but maybe they were meaningful to those kids and result in some teaching material to accelerate their development for future years.

To be fair it's one extra semester. I agree with your premise though.

Can't speak on Lang, but I'm hoping they get Hummel into the LB rotation by years end. The 3-4 puts a lot of pressure on that group to tackle and tackle well. I think the staff recognizes they need to develop more depth in case of injury, and spread snaps out more evenly. Especially when one of them is taking offensive snaps, as well!

Been wondering why Lang hasn't played. What happened to him?

He's a little dinged up and we have 3 serviceable guys right now. No use burning him if he isn't going to heavily contribute and I think the only place he could do that is on KR, which, with todays kick off rules, isn't a big deal anymore. It's going to be nice to be sitting with a Senior, two juniors, a RS sophomore and a RS Freshman who could all play next year so long as they all stay which may or may not happen but you can afford attrition there pretty easily especially if they grab a guy this year, which I would think they will. The stable of RBs and WRs right now is pretty damn impressive.

They're playing a DB at one of those LB spots. We go between a 4-2-5 and a 3-3-5 from a personnel standpoint. I do agree with you. If you can get Hummel some useful snaps, even though I'm not sure he's a starter for two more years, you have to do it. While most of the key guys return, there aren't a whole lot of bodies there.

CPR loved to redshirt true freshmen and sometimes JUCO's. Campbell is more willing to play kids. Just wanted to see what everyone thought of this.

Last year we saw some great things from true freshmen like Deshaunte Jones and David Montgomery. But there were other freshmen that barely played/contributed, such as Jamahl Johnson (sp?). I didn't think much of it last year, but this year there are a number of kids who have played but have not really contributed. Johnny Lang is the perfect example. He is the #4 RB and has only played in one game I think. There are others who have barely played, and it makes me wonder why. I know at some positions it's a matter of not having enough depth, but I don't see the point in wasting a year of eligibility on a kid that is not going to see meaningful snaps? I'm not criticizing, just trying to figure it out.

Matt Leo is another head scratcher. He has a redshirt available and with his size and athleticism, I thought he should redshirt and take a year to learn the game of football better. Imagine working with him for an entire year and then getting two years of total domination. Did age have anything to do with this decision? I think he's already in his mid 20's if I'm not mistaken.

Anyways, curious to hear some thoughts and maybe debate this topic a bit.
Coach Matt Campbell is smarter than you, so don't worry about what he is doing, he knows everything and that is why we are winning. Thank you
