I'm starting to get the idea that Fred is not going to offer big project-type players just to fill scholarships. Rather aim high (Top 100 guys) and if you miss - take JuCos and transfers in the late spring. You'll get a player more likely to contribute, and you'll turnover that scholarship spot (for another shot at an elite prep) a lot faster.

Im kind of getting that feeling as well. It seems to be big name contributor or bust.

I'm pretty sure ISU even slowed down recruiting a borderline Top 100 guy in Vince Hunter last year, and decided to go JuCo instead. I don't think this staff is real interested in development, which is just fine with me.

100% accurate.

Well to be more accurate. I think Fred is willing to take guard projects because I think he understands how to develop them a bit more than big men. Also, the learning curve is often higher for bigs so getting one who can contribute right away is more likely at the Juco/Transfer level than High school

Didn't think I'd have to read about Bubu's/Amardi's scholarship situation in this thread...

Anyways does anyone know when the rivals rankings update? I thought I saw somewhere before they projected Custer to move up.

Rivals will probably drop him down to a 2-star because he's coming to ISU. Then after Custer has a huge year, Rivals will make an article about him saying "I always knew this guy was underrated".

Sorry, no longer applies.

I see your point but not in all cases. If they're not interested in development, then Edozie is a headscratcher, because he is going to need a lot of development to even lightly contribute in conference play.

Jaylen Johnson told ESPN that he's definitely visiting Louisville and Iowa State for an official visit.

If he is definitely coming back for an official visit, then that is a good sign. Hope we can convince him this is the place for him to be!

Louisville's facilities are sick. I don't know what kind of Michigan connections they have compared to ISU.

We need to have two other elite 'bigs' commit to Louisville first, maybe that could help.

Louisville is already pretty stacked at the post position the next couple of years but adding one or two more bigs in '14 would definitely help make the Clones look more attractive. Of course a couple of them may go pro next year thus opening up some playing time. I like the fact he had ISU in his top three all summer and is coming for a visit show's he is serious and likes the staff.

My concern is not that we aren't recruiting well is that we could finish 2nd on all of our Plan A guys. This is how it goes when recruiting at a high level.

With Tillman and Macura as "Plan B" guys I think we would be fine if we strike out on Vaughn or Reid/Johnson and could land one of those and a JUCO

More of Custer's ask.fm:

Did KU offer? If they didn't, you can show them what they're missing when you beat them by 20 in Allen Field house while wearing Cardinal and Gold.

That's the plan haha
