Like the old slogan, Army of one?Pods of 2
Are you me? This sounds like me.I go back to my thoughts from a few years ago. If you are looking for THE best team to be your national champion, why include teams that are not their conference champion. Why should we want the national champion to be a LOSER in their own conference.
The tournament should be among the champions of their conferences regardless of size or level of conference. Why include the teams that were defeated in their conference tournament if they were not the best in their conference.
We should require all teams to have been in a conference and have succeeded in that conference (attention ND). Call it the Tournament of Champions.
Unless all that anyone wants is money why watch a repeat of games from the B1G and SEC? Is it merely so we can take more money from their fans?
There is only 4, maybe 5 conferences that can be considered anywhere close to equal. I know we all don’t want the 4th best SEC team in a playoff but the thing is going to 12 teams. I’ll take runner-ups from B1G, SEC, big 12 and ACC before we mandate a sun belt or Maction champion. All American sports leagues play best of 7. Champions league plays two per round. Get the best teams and let them play. If big 12 only gets one then so be it, but some years we might get 2 or even 3 teams in. Why should last year we only sent k state, when we could have sent them and TCU?I go back to my thoughts from a few years ago. Not bad. Half (four) are coming into the B12: Houston (twice), Central Florida (twice), Cincinnati, and BYU.I understand peoples desire to replicate in college football what we see in college basketball with the little known Cinderella school making a deep run. But I don't feel we have the same parity in college football. By having 1 or 2 G5 teams in the playoff by default, IMO there will be more blowout games. Just look at the blowout games we have seen in a 4 team CFP!
I did a quick data dive for the 8 CFP seasons (excluding 2020 season) to see what impact would have been if CFP was 12 teams instead of 4.
My quick takes:
- If Big12 doesn't want this to be a Power 2 Playoff, its critical we have more than 2 teams in the top 12 and we need to win CFP games.
- Surprised that ND would have only made 12 team playoff 3x
- Have to believe Big10 & SEC will want 4 or 5 teams each in in CFP. They didn't add OU, UT, USC, UCLA, UO and UW to be 3 bid leagues.
- 11 G5 teams have finished in top 20 over the 8 years. And 5 have finished top 15.

Total Teams Selected Over 8 Seasons
SEC - 24
Big10 - 24
Big12 - 15
Pac12 -14
ACC - 13
Notre Dame - 3
G5 - 3 (Cincy & UCF 2x)

aka Big10 had 1 season with 2 teams, 6 season with 3 teams and 1 season with 4 teams.

This is why we have to push for the best teams to get in. We are a multi-bid conference almost always. Why trade that in for the chance for a sun belt team to get murdered. They won their conference. Maybe some year the third best B1G and SEC team and our 2nd best team should get in to a 12 team playoffI understand peoples desire to replicate in college football what we see in college basketball with the little known Cinderella school making a deep run. This was on the first page of this thread. Cloneguy8…could you have even imagined what happened…maybe if you were on mushrooms that nightI'll agree this is good news for ISU/Big 12, but it just feels weird. Can't wait for those Rutgers vs USC matchups.
I would argue that excluding the smaller conference champs entirely just makes the gap bigger. Currently they can sell players a chance to compete for a conference title and maybe get a shot at the bigger schools that are overlooking them. Take that away and give the money and exposure to the bigger teams and you’re closer to a P2 situation. It’s not a right or wrong thing because both options have pros and cons, but I enjoy the David vs Goliath part of the college game that you don’t really get elsewhere in American sports. This is why we have to push for the best teams to get in. TV partners don’t want David vs Goliath, they want a P2 like model in the playoffs.I would argue that excluding the smaller conference champs entirely just makes the gap bigger. If there's a true merger, which is highly unlikely, it would be with the AAC.Pac 4 should suck it up and merge with the Mountain West. Mountain West has some good football teams. I'd vote to keep them a power league and keep that auto bid. Granted, they would be the weakest power league. However, we were in the same position a couple years ago relative to the other leagues.
There are no conference auto bids. It is simply the top 6 ranked conference champions. The top 6 could very realistically be B1G, Big 12, SEC, ACC, AAC, and MWC.Pac 4 should suck it up and merge with the Mountain West. Mountain West has some good football teams. I'd vote to keep them a power league and keep that auto bid. Granted, they would be the weakest power league. However, we were in the same position a couple years ago relative to the other leagues.
If they expand to 16, I’d be good with AQs for top 8 conference champions and 8 at larges.Argument for best teams only means eye test. That would suck. Give me conference champs for top 5 conferences and then best teams.
That or the AAC is probably their best option at this point but there's no way that conference should be given P4 status or an auto qualifier for the CFP, IMO.Pac 4 should suck it up and merge with the Mountain West. I am all in on a high profile conference called “The Big Red” that does not include Nebraska.Coast to coast, every time zone, top brands, nattys in FB & BB . . . . I'm in.
