Whether Oregon goes to the Big 10 or not, a merger is probably never going to make sense vs. picking off the best remaining 4-6, or whatever it takes to get critical mass to potentially open up some new possibilities with Apple or similar.

I'm not saying there might not be scenarios where inclusion of some of these schools makes sense, but it's important to understand that OSU, WSU, Cal, CU, UA, Stanford are basically like bringing in another KU football program in terms of viewership. It's likely the inclusion of any of these would hurt the per school media value. These are very bad TV products.

However, in addition to the media opportunities, the critical mass argument can be made to ensure playoff inclusion.

In my opinion, UW, Utah and ASU are takes, no questions asked. Then for the playoff inclusion efforts, you take CU and probably UA as well.

If Oregon goes to the Big 10, then the Big 12 is in the driver's seat. If the Big 12 wants to offer a lower share for initial years, I think they can try to work that for some of the schools.

Another reason I suspect the mountain schools (Arizona, ASU, Colorado, and Utah) might make moves sooner rather than later.

They are probably better off if they make moves before anyone else in the PAC.

Problem with the 16 teams this would result in is a real lack of marquee matchups. Not to mention, little rivalry interest. So while the pie may expand, it will be small. Then you’re dividing it 16 ways. So all continue to fall behind. This sums up the rivalry/marquee sentiment.

I agree with his post, I mean no one cares about going to Lubbock lol. But losing nebraska and missouri hurt us for awhile but now I absolutely hate Kstate and baylor. WVU is just in a tough spot.

It’s a mediocre option vs a terrible one. Most WVU fans would still rather be here if the alternative was playing Pitt and Virginia Tech in the MAC.

Realignment is killing rivalries but schools are still making the best available decisions for them. Just because those aren’t great decisions doesn’t make the alternatives better, necessarily.

What I find funny is when fans of Iowa or Nebraska make comments like " I will allow Notre Dame in the BIG, but never ISU" it sounds like they personally have the ability to grant membership into their club.

When in reality, perhaps in just a few years, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, LSU, USC etc. will form a super super conference and leave behind their smaller schools like Iowa, Nebraska, etc.

Why does Ohio State want to essentially give the same share of revenue to Purdue (for example) than keep double that amount themselves? Because the BIG members have a special brotherhood?

Reality is greed and selfishness are alive in college athletics....but perhaps there will be a group of universities (like ISU) that actually will find a niche in this new market and have fun.

This is why I would like the big 12 to open their arms and be the statue of liberty for us misfit universities:

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore"

Let's welcome the Washington States of the world to the conference...after all, I have a lot more fun at a wedding in a barn (big 12), than a wedding at a pretentious cathedral (big 10).

Not exactly sure.
Are we supposed to still believe college Presidents when They say that academics is the most important over money. When they send these kids on cross country flights in the middle of the week?

Timing is interesting if they want to hurry to get a tentative number from FOX/whoever that they can show the mountain schools and say that staying is better for them.

Keep in mind it’s 9:00 AM on the west coast so this meeting was even earlier than that. Seems like trying to get ahead of the Big 12 meeting today.

Thanks for the info. Crazy they are still holding a grudge all these years later. I wonder if ND would make more money as an Independent or as a member of the Big 10.
I don’t think money is a main factor.

When I was first a grad student at ND, the swarm of alumni and subway alumni used to annoy me to no end on football weekends. Make any purchase you need at bookstore on Thursday night cause an invasion is coming on Friday. The traffic was miserable. The crazy outfits, plaid pants, domer helmets, etc. The flock around the grotto that spread across the street to the lake.

But a few games in, I started chatting with these people. The stories of their youth when every store had an “Irish not welcome” sign were things I never imagined. The university became a symbol for Catholic immigrant families throughout Europe and an important symbol of pride in their heritage.

My sons were admitted to ND but attended college elsewhere based on financial aid or academic major areas. We saw on the admission tour multiple times that even as recently as 2017, they still include the history of the blackballing by the Big Ten in one of the videos. It is an institution with a very long memory.

That’s what gets me, especially on non-revenue sports. Let’s send the USC swim team to Rutgers this week.

If they needed authorization to begin media negotiations, therein lies one of their biggest problems. Media 'discussion' should be ongoing. They should always know their media value. Therefore, 'authorization' merely means ... what? Dissolution of their existing contract(s) in order to open the door for new offers? They really are a mess over there.
