Re-al Mitchell Packages

From everything that I have seen, Mitchell seems to be a great teammate. I don't know if he is reluctant to switch positions or not, but I wouldn't blame him since he is only a redshirt freshman and he is a class behind Purdy now. Also, he was needed at QB this year. We didn't have the depth at QB to move him even if the staff wanted to. If Purdy would have been injured at any point, Mitchell would have been our QB. Next year may be different, but I doubt it. It will be difficult to count on an incoming freshman as your QB2. What Purdy did as a freshman is really rare. I would like to see Mitchell get some more snaps, but I would prefer it to be in some blowouts before we count on him in a tight game.

ISU fans remain undefeated in their love of backup quarterbacks

Brock Purdy is 4th in the nation in passing yard and has broken nearly every single season school record but theres still dipsh¡ts on here "hmmm i wonder what the backup who's thrown 2 total passes could do???"

guess what? if he was that good, he'd be playing. he's not. Staff cant force him to go in at WR or RB or Wildcat or whatver if he doesnt want to
Your the one acting like a dumb ass. Not wanting the kid to leave and wanting him to get more looks on the field have nothing to do with Brock not being on the field.

I think Arctic’s point is that Re-Al is reluctant to go on the field in a position other than QB, which is why the staff hasn’t been able to tinker with a package with both him and Brock on the field. As Arctic said, you can’t force a kid to go into the game at receiver even if the staff would’ve loved to try it out

Would love to know his source.

Well Belichick or McDaniels had Edelmen throw a touchdown pass a couple games ago. We need to do something because we've regressed the last few games and it's just not Purdy. Mitchell is strong and fast in my view and surely there is a few plays out there for him. It's a head scratcher for sure.
We regressed against KSU because the wind was blowing 30mph consistently the whole game making it nearly impossible to through the ball more than 10 yards down field. By far the windiest game I've ever attended in person.

As long as Purdy is productive and healthy it is not productive to be using any kind of a 2 QB system. So the only way I see it is Re-Al is probably going to be given the option to make a position change in the offseason or will have to decide if he want to continue to be a QB and possibly enter the transfer portal. We have 2 QBs in the 2020 class including a 4 star in Hunter Dekkers who is a dual threat QB and Aiden Bouman so there should be some decent depth at QB position to allow him make that transition too.

Guessing there will be some plays called for Re-Al in the bowl game with it being the last game of the season and the risk of injury depth at QB being very minimal at this point. We saw it last year in the bowl game they lined him up at WR and Leach immediately called a timeout as they probably already had it scouted that if he comes into the game what kind of plays they could run with him. I think the kid is talented and seems like a good kid off the field too. Would hate to see him leave but we already have a QB that is probably going to leave ISU as the most accomplished QB in school history when it is all said and done so unless he changes positions or waits it out until Purdy is done at ISU which he likely will be a 4 year player as I think even with his talent his size is probably going to be somewhat of a negative to his draft stock. Just seems like if Re-Al is set on staying at QB his only options really are transferring or waiting for his shot after Purdy is done. Joel Lanning might be a good guy for him to talk to as he probably is the best example of what this staff can do when a player buys into a position change for the good of the team.

Everything in Campbell's track record shows that the best players play. He's played freshmen, transfers, walk-ons, etc. If he felt Re-Al could help the team with certain packages, and if Re-Al had bought in to that, it would have been done.

One of the most disappointing parts of this season was our lack of creativity in getting one of our most dynamic playmakers on the field in Re-al Mitchell. I feel like that was a major fail on the coaching staff. I really hope they work on some packages to make that happen next year, but my fear is that he will transfer. Nights like Kansas State, he could have been a real spark plug/difference-maker. Will anything change next year? Will he still be around?

So you would want to put your back up quarterback at risk, when we haven’t had a quarterback finish the season in how many years?

This is as bad as your post Iowa thread

Cambell has talked about the Re-al dilemma. His concern has been him getting hurt and having no backup.

I do know this... If we can not effectively run the football, our offense has a hard time sustaining drives if our QB isn't a legitimate run threat. They've kept Purdy in the pocket a lot (too much in my opinion) in order to protect him and have gambled on being able to make deep strikes and open field passes that can be broke for TDs. This has worked great at times and not so great at others. There was no reason to do so Saturday, especially with the weather, and even more so in the 4th Quarter. You can be mobile and still minimize contact. Russell Wilson does it all the time in a league with bigger faster players.

I'd love to see Re-al get 5-8 snaps per game if for no other reason than to force the defense to have to prepare for something else. OU used to do that with Bell.
