Rankings

Playoff rankings come out in 9 days. That is all that matters. Take care of WV this week and we are likely around 15 in that heading to a home date against Texas!

I would not want to be Texas if that happens

You mean Texas "weeeeeerrreeeeee baaaack" short de-horns?

Baylor hosts Texas this weekend. Math nerds... Who should we cheer for? I feel like it's Texas, but I'm not sure
It's Texas for purely tie-breaker reasons. However, from now on, never root for Texas, is my motto.

I hate Texas, but I think I will be rooting for Texas. ISU already lost to Baylor so removing them from the log jam at #2 helps ISU. Then ISU and OSU are tied for #2 with ISU having the head to head tie breaker. Texas is already a game behind.

AP rankings seem pretty meaningless. Iowa moves back into the top 10 after a bye, and we beat a #8 Oklahoma State team that we were favored to beat, but Oklahoma State still ends up ranked higher than us. It's just a silly popularity contest.

Looking forward to Nov. 2 when the first college football playoffs rankings come out.
Oklahoma State also only has one loss. They deserve to be higher than us.

That's crazy to me.

When the power rankings showed we were the better team going into the game, and we proved those rankings correct by beating them head to head, and yet the AP still ranks them higher than us just shows the AP ranking is nothing more than a beauty contest.

Assuming we take care of business in West Virginia next Saturday, I guarantee Iowa State will be the higher ranked team in the first college football playoff ranking. It's the only ranking that matters.

Rankings are laughable right now. We were top ten and lose close games to two current top 16 teams and fall completely out. Sitting at 5-2 and barely make the rankings beating an undefeated top ten team? Whatever. If it was Ohio State or Alabama in our seat they’d be top 15.

They'd be Top 10 if not higher.

Penn State should not be ranked right now.

Some of you are hilarious. “Such and such isn’t a top 10 team!”

I freaking can’t stand the Big Ten as they and the SEC get propped up more than they should. But people, there has to be ten teams in the top 10 and this far into the season if you are 7-0 or 8-0 in a P5 you are going to be there 99% of the timeWake Forest to me should be in the top-10. Give Clemson that same record and schedule and they are top-3. We would be screaming if we were 7-0 and not in the top ten right now.

When it comes to Michigan and Michigan State, at least put who your top-10 would be if you don’t think they should be there. Here’s what I would vote top

1. Georgia
2. Cincinnati
3. Alabama
4. Michigan
5. Oklahoma
6. Oregon
7. Ohio State
8. Michigan State
9. Notre Dame
10. Wake Forest
11. Oklahoma State

mine is based off a combo of resume, eye test and record. I think people need to realize the next couple of weeks things are going to shuffle like crazy due to the CFP Rankings taking over and teams finally having to play against each other.

AP and even CFP rankings aren’t meant to be a pure analytics power ranking. OSU has a better resume than ISU. A 3 point win at him doesn’t change that. If you want to use your same logic if ISU wins the next two and Iowa loses two more should they be ranked ahead of ISU?

People want to discount the early losses like it’s an ESPN NFL power ranking because ISU is playing really well. ISU is probably one of the best 12-15 teams in the country, but ISU has an 18-23 type resume.

I agree. I think what grinds peoples gears is that these dumb rankings often put name recognition over analytics and those types of things in most scenarios. Which is dumb because the people that vote on these things “should” be aware of the numbers and informed but we know they are not and many times vote based on brand. But this kind of thing isn’t new and no one should be surprised. I’m not judging, it annoys me too even when it shouldn’t.

This is the last AP poll that matters. Everyone will shift to CFP rankings next week, and I am expecting a nice boost for ISU if we handle WVU.

If we beat WV we will be inside the top 15 in the first playoff poll. It's always fun watching the AP voters "correct" their rankings after the first playoff poll comes out.

Iowa has fallen up hill all season....

Rankings are nothing but a groupthink, media circle jerk.

I've always looked at the AP and other media rankings as a way to tell how long since a team lost. The higher you are, the longer it has been since you lost. You never go up really; you just go down when you lose.

We want Texas to give Baylor their second conference loss because we can control head to head with Texas. This scenario would actually give Iowa State a little wiggle room as losing another game goes if we hold head to head on Texas.

Exactly this. Maybe this is the year ISU doesn’t get a big CFP bump, but it is shaping up to happen again. As analytics are used more and more, if ISU plays a clean game and cruises vs WVU be prepared for a top 15 in the first CFP followed by lots of butthurt from other fanbases.

4 top 10 Big 10 teams and Iowa doesn’t play any of them (obv includes themselves). Makes the toe stub against Purdue even funnier with the fortune they’ve had with their schedule.
