On another note, has anyone ever hired a house keeper or a maid?

Been thinking about getting one for a while and never pulled the trigger. I just despise cleaning and doing a deep clean then a once monthly might be good for me

I have a cleaning lady. It is one of our “splurges” that helps keep mama sane. It actually started when I would always call my mom to help me clean and she was finally like, “why don’t you find a service and we will pay for half”. Win-win. They did that for a year or so, now we pay it all. We started with a one-time deep clean and then someone comes every two weeks. We have it set up by time—we play an hourly rate and they work on a list and once time is done they are done whether the list is finished or not. We have them focus on the bathrooms/kitchen & dining room/main upstairs living room. Nothing in the bedrooms except occasionally dust in the master and vacuum the master bedroom. Honestly with 6 people living here you can’t tell they have come 3 minutes after we all are home, but it is nice to have. And I still clean, just not as throughly as they do. You can also pay a little bit higher rate and they will work until everything you want done is done but we just go by time right now.

@harimad I have only had fake nails once for my wedding. I have also never had a pedicure, I just paint my own toenails in the summer. My nails very short and very rarely painted. But yes to all those struggles. :p My 86yr old aunt has always had arcrylic nails for as long as I have known her.

Not on a regular basis, but my landlord wanted me to hire someone to do a deep clean when we renewed our lease one year (He didn't raise our rates the entire 4 years we were living in that house so I can't complain to much). They were there so long, and did such a thorough job I actually paid them double. Felt bad at what the hourly rate was going to be.

Side Note: I don't think that landlord realized how good he had it with us (IMO). We left March 1 and the house is still on the rental market.

I've told Dh I'd like to get a 1 or 2x time a month cleaner after baby. We're both terrible about keeping up with sweeping floors and such now....dont imagine that will improve when we are both back working.

I just put my kids to work but am running low on those. On the other hand, less messy with less people.

Seriously teach your teenagers how to clean, change tire, cook, do laundry, etc. Sad how many college kids are clueless.

My sophomore daughter said she would love a life skills class like that. I mean she does know how to clean, cook, can do laundry. I just need to make her do it. ;)

We had one for several years, just couldn’t fit in the French maid uniform anymore so we had to let her go.

My wife can’t sew, so my mom does that, when she’s too busy and desperate I will do it myself. I have taught a lot of basic household chores to my wife. I thought people just knew them.

BC reminds me of sewing. One of son’s friends brought me his shirt, the button that needed to be sewn back on, a scissors and thread when tailgating. No needle. Little did he know I always have sewing kit in car.

We used to have a longer home ec class in junior high as opposed to current middle school FACS class. Ours always has them make a pillow case or pajama pants when simple mending would be more helpful.

A summer life skills class would be great. One of my adult kids blew out a knee and I now realize they are woefully unprepared for the clusterf**k that is health insurance. He got a fairly high deductible as still has ours as secondary but was totally clueless as to concepts like network savings, coinsurance, etc. So all of them are suffering thru Mom’s health insurance PowerPoint 101.

Weekend update time. Thanks for all the wishes y'all, much appreciated.

The service was beautiful and the preparer must have been very good because Grandmother in her casket looked great, to the point I had to walk away after viewing her for just a few moments. We all agreed that the secondary presenter needs to work on his singing voice a bit, but hey-- more power to him, it takes a lot of confidence to stand in front of a group of strangers and sing for them.

I knew we had tall genes in the family, but being around them all at once is something else. Normally I tower over everyone in any room in which I am standing. But here, even in heels, I was looking up at most of the men/boys.

Dad had three siblings-- my aunt, and his half-brother and half-sister (via divorce)-- and all were there. I only knew one of them well-- his full sister, who is my favorite aunt. She had four chlldren, all daughters, all cheerleader/majorette types who if I'm not mistaken every single one was homecoming queen. I haven't seen my cousins in years. Most memories are from when we were children, fighting over toys in grandma's house, or swimming in grandpa's pool. They were all great. Didn't skip a beat greeting me, had genuine smiles for me, and we chatted and gossiped together to the point that my dad had to drag me away when he wanted to leave. I think I'd still be there chatting with my two closest cousins even now if I hadn't been sharing the rental car with my parents.

One of my aunts even told my mom that she thought I was very attractive, and I fit in perfectly with my cousins. So that felt pretty damn great. And the cousin I hung out with most when we were young, lives in StL now and we have plans to meet up and introduce my daughter to them in October-- so DD will gain relationships with an aunt, uncle, and two cousins this fall!

I was sad that I had to fly out of there Saturday. But the one good thing about the flight time is the guy in line in front of me at the ticket counter swapped numbers with me, and the next time I'm in L.A., I've got a booty call if I need it. And damn he was good-looking too. rofl.

So glad all went well for you Harimad. It's really nice when things go well for people.

So, the job at Ole Miss would/will involve a course they hadn't mentioned, an upper-level history of the U.S. from 1789-1860, or to Yankee ears, "The slavery story."

I'll be prepping that course today and tomorrow to sell my version of it Wednesday morning.

Course description from their website: "This course examines the social, political, economic, and cultural history from the founding of the nation through the expansion of the frontier, market revolution, rise of plantation slavery, and the era of reform."

That's everything I do. It's like they wrote it for me, and selecting the dissertation chapter that spells all that out was probably a good choice.

So do you have to teach the Southern version or the Northern Version;)o_O?

I believe you're renting though, yes? My second-hand horror story was a friend from HS moving from a postion at Olivet Nazarene in Illinois to a similar position at Trivecca in TN. Something went haywire on the closing of the sale of their house in IL, and they REALLY wanted/needed to get down to TN because school started for their 3 boys on (get this) August 1.

And with Erik's story, that's inspired me to get my butt on to the computer and apply for the job I saw last week.

Pulling and praying for ya, @CycloneErik !

Good luck SaraV.

I really don't think I've gotten in that much better shape, but drop the temp 10 degrees and the humidity by what seemed like 20 points and bike riding sure got easier. The ride that was hard right before the 4th was quite pleasant this evening.

Have to install a new outer porch door tomorrow. The roughing it in isn't so bad it's the fine tuning that drives me nuts. Also more than likely will have to do some shortening of the door if I remember correctly the last time I worked on this door. Oh well metal blade in circular saw will cure that. Note to self take earplugs with me tomorrow.

I'm sure it's cool to date a celebrity, but I hope that Amber Rose gal is just a phase for Monte.

Spent the evening with four granddaughters and their mother, visiting from the east coast. Fun night, sent them home about a half hour ago. The younger two had been asleep on the couches for over an hour; the teenagers were still playing games with us until they started yawning and having trouble focusing. We figured they'd best get back to the house they're staying in, but it was a lovely evening. :)
